History

Established in 1952 on Key Biscayne land famed for pirate, Indian, and lighthouse tales Saint Agnes served three dozen families. The first Masses were celebrated on Mashta Point in a desolate mansion previously owned by the Matheson family and renovated by the Mackle family. On dark, rainy days, worshipers used flashlights to follow the services in their missals. The Mackle brothers, prominent Key Biscayne developers, donated land to the parish for a church, named to honor Saint Agnes, their mother’s patron saint.

About seventy-five families celebrated the first Mass in the present church on Easter 1954. Cuban refugees arrived between 1959 and 196; parishioners responded to the immigrants’ needs, establishing a school and forming a parish council, charismatic prayer groups, and outreach ministries to serve the needy.

Although Hurricane Andrew disrupted parish life in 1992, parishioners collected food and useful items for the hardest hit families in Dade and Homestead areas. Later they added a Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Parishioners from Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain and vacationers from the north foster an ecumenical spirit among the community’s four churches.
