History

Originally a mission of Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Notre Dame d’Haiti sits in the heart of Miami’s Little Haiti. When an influx of Haitians arrived in the 1980s, the mission that began at Saint Mary’s Cathedral under the guidance of the late Father Marcel Peloquin, an Oblate missionary, had expanded in worshippers and needs and this growth required a larger space. To serve both social and religious needs of the faithful, the late Emeritus Archbishop Edward McArthy decided to move the mission from Saint Mary to what was Notre Dame Academy for Girls. Since then, the mission has carried the name Notre Dame d’Haiti in honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the patron saint of Haiti.

The mission continues to serve the largest Haitian community and supports The Pierre Toussaint Haitian Catholic Center. Encompassing the Notre Dame Day Care, a literacy program, a legal project outreach, and other services, the center has gained international recognition as of the most important agencies serving the Haitian community, especially for developing, promoting, and administering programs that assist Haitian refugees to become self-sufficient.

Misyon an kontinye ap sèvi bezwen youn nan pi gwo kominote Ayisyen nan diaspora a epi tou li sipòte Sant Katolik Pierre Toussaint an. Sant sa, ki gen ladan l yon lekòl gadri pou timoun, yon pwogram alfabetizasyon ak sèvis asistans legal pou imigrasyon, ak lòt kalite sèvis ankò, gen anpil repondong entènasyonal kòm youn nan pi gwo ajans k ap sèvi kominote Ayisyèn, espesyalman nan zafè devlopman, promosyon ak administrasyon pwogram k ap ede refi gye Ayisyen yo entegre nan peyi pa bò isit.
