East Dade Deanery -

Dedicated: Dec. 2, 1973 / (started Sept. 8, 1966)

History

The nation’s newest Marian shrine, dedicated to Our Lady of Charity, reflects Cuban-American history. Its central image is a replica of one honored at Cuba’s national shrine in El Cobre, representing the patroness of Cuba and symbolizing Cuban faith and culture.

Since the early 1600s, Cubans have honored the “Virgin of Charity” (the inscription on a statue found floating in stormy waters by three farm workers, who understood it as an answer to their prayers for safety). When people rejecting Cuba’s communist system entered the United States, the replica followed them in 1961, smuggled through the Panamanian embassy.

In 1966, on Our Lady of Charity’s feast, September 8, Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll asked Cuban refugees to build a shrine. He donated land on Biscayne Bay, near the waters that also bathe Cuba. John Cardinal Krol of Philadelphia dedicated the shrine on December 2, 1973. Thousands of small contributions made this monument to faith and freedom possible.

The first small chapel, remodeled into a convent for the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul who have worked there since 1975, is now part of the Padre Felix Varela Building, where pilgrims gather.

The shrine’s conical form reflects the statue’s mantle: “Under your mantle we seek shelter, Holy Mother of God.” The architecture invites visitors to enter the Virgin’s heart and fi nd the Word of God. The six columns supporting the mantle represent Cuba’s six traditional provinces. Fourteen feet above sea level, the building is 90’ high and 80’ wide. The statue of Our Lady, holding out Jesus, invites all to look toward Him. The mural behind the statue was painted by Teok Carrasco, a native of Nipe, where the original statue was found. Mary appears over the waters, holding her Child. Christ is the central figure, central to human history. Illustrations of Cuban history surround them.

Under the altar is a composite stone of earth, stone and sand from the six provinces, cast with water brought from Cuba on a raft on which fifteen refugees perished at sea. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops designated the site a National Shrine in 2000.

Fòm kokiy Santyè a reprezante manto stati a kote nou jwen enskri: “Mari, ou menm ki Manman Bondye, anba manto l lan, n ap chèche pwoteksyon w.” Achitekti a envite vizitè yo antre nan Kè Manman Mari pou yo twouve Pawòl Bondye a. Sis kolòn yo ki sipòte manto a reprezante sis depatman kiba yo nan tan pase. Sanktyè a plase a 14 pye pye d’wotè pi wo pase nivo dlo lanmè a, epi edifi ala menm mezire 90 pye d’wotè ak 80 pye d’lajè.

Konferans Episkopal Letazini an te dezinye sanktyè kòm yon Sanktyè Nasyonal nan lane 2000.
