History

In the 1940s, Catholics in west Miami attended Gesu, one of the city’s five parishes. The need for another parish prompted the formation of Saint Michael the Archangel in 1946, the first Mass celebrated in September of that year at the at the Miami Senior High School’s Auditorium. Worshipers established religious education classes held in private homes and volunteered as altar servers. By 1947 the need for a church became a priority. An Army Chapel at Hendrick Field and a hospital ward at Camp Murphy in Stuart were declared surplus sale properties at a modest price; worshipers raised the funds to purchase these structures, traveled back and forth to collect movable and usable furnishings. A local construction company disassembled and relocated the buildings to Miami, and in 1947, the parish became officially named for Saint Michael. They established a school in 1951.

Parishioners established Café Saint Michael’s to foster community. They support Saint Vincent de Paul, Food for the Poor and numerous other outreach efforts, including groups that distribute necessitie

Nesesite pou yon lòt pawas te fè yo fòme St. Michael the Archangel an 1946, premye lamès la te chante nan mwa Septanm menm ane-a nan oditryum Miami Senior High School. Fidèl yo te kòmanse fè kou edikasyon relijye nan kay prive e yo te konn fè volontè kòm anfand kè. Rive 1947 nesesite pou yon legliz te vin pi enpotan pase tout lòt bagay. Lame te gen yon chapèl nan Hendrick Field ak yon lopital nan Camp Murphy nan Stuart yo pat bezwen ankò. Yo deside vann yo bon mache. Fidèl yo ranmase lajan pou achte tou lè de batiman yo. Fidèl yo vwayaje ale vini pou yo transpòte mèb ki tekapab deplase e ki teka sèvi toujou. Yon konpayi konstriksyon nan zòn nan demonte batiman yo pote desann Miyami e an 1947 responsab yo bay pawas la non St. Michael. Yo tabli yon lekòl an 1951.

Pawasyen louvri yon ti restoran yo rele Café St. Michael pou ankouraje fratènite pami moun yo. Yo sipòte St. Vincent de Paul Society, Food for the Poor ak kèk lòt sèvis kòminotè tankou gwoup ki al bay atik ki nesesè pou timoun ki fèk fèt e ki nan bezwen ak manje pou pòv ki pa gen kay.
