History

Established in 1970, Saint Martha was founded on the site of the old Bikini Motel and drew parishioners from Saint Rose of Lima and Holy Family. The founding pastor was Msgr. Bryan O. Walsh, and Mass was celebrated in the former motel. Parishioners converted one of the motel buildings into a temporary church and hall seating 200 while adapting another building into a rectory and leasing the rest of the former motel to Catholic Service Bureau, Inc, as a home for unaccompanied Cuban refugee boys.

Father John McLaughlin was appointed pastor in 1979; this same year parishioners formed the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the Parish Evangelization Committee. On its tenth anniversary in 1980, Archbishop Edward McCarthy, announced plans for a new church. Parishioners formed the Saint Martha Women’s Club in 1981, the same year that parish priests moved into a rectory after living in motel rooms for a dozen years.

Visitors from around the world came to pray in the new church, dedicated in 1983, most notably Blessed Mother Teresa from Calcutta in 1986 and the Holy Father Pope John Paul II, in 1987.

Today, St. Martha’s is celebrating a spiritual and structural renewal with a rich multicultural community.
