History

Then known as Saint Mel’s Mission–under the guidance of Saint John in Hialeah until 1954–Mass was celebrated over a Laundromat while the present school building was under construction. When dedicated in 1955, the lower floor served as a temporary church and the upper floors, classrooms. That same year, Visitation parish in North Miami took over the mission, and four Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary and 10 lay teachers staffed the school.

The mission attained parish status in 1957 and construction of a school hall and new church began the next year. During the dedication of the new church in 1958, Bishop Coleman Carroll announced the change of the parish’s and school’s name to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Change came to the area in the 1970s; high crime prompted parishioners to move. Pastor Father Oscar F. Castañeda ushered in a spirit of revitalization in 1995, inviting a Head Start program to rent in the school’s first floor and expanding the Religious Education program. The parish continues its new mission to “Seek the Lost, leading them home.”

Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Legliz Notre-Dame Pèpetyèl Sekou te rekonèt sou non Misyon Saint Mel nan Hialeah jouk nan lane 1954. Lamès yo te selebre nan yon Laundromat (kote yo lave rad) pandan legliz la tap konstwi. Lè legliz la te inogire nan lane 1955, li te gen 2 etaj, konsa anba te sèvi kòm legliz tanporèman, epi anlè a pou klas. Menm ane a, pawas Vizitasyon nan zòn nò Miami te pran anchaj misyon an.

Pawas la ap kontinye nouvo misyon l pou ‘Chèche sila yo ki pedi pou mennen yo lakay yo” nan bra manman Notre- Dame.
