Miami... (Aug. 22, 2014) On Saturday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m., Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes of Nicaragua will be available for a press conference at St. Agatha Parish Hall, located at 1111 S.W. 107 Ave., Miami.Cardinal Brenes is coming to South Florida to make a pastoral visit to Nicaraguans living abroad. The visit also coincides with his 40th anniversary as a priest.
Immediately following the press conference, Cardinal Brenes will celebrate the 7 p.m. Mass at St. Agatha Church, along with Archbishop Thomas Wenski and other archdiocesan priests. The full guard of the Knights of Columbus will also be present.
Cardinal Brenes was among the first group of bishops to be named cardinals by Pope Francis. He was elevated into the College of Cardinals Feb. 22, 2014, becoming the sole new cardinal from Central America, and only the second cardinal in the history of Nicaragua.
Cardinal Brenes was ordained a priest Aug. 16, 1974 by his predecessor, Nicaraguan Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo. In March 1988, Cardinal Obando y Bravo ordained him auxiliary bishop of Managua, where he served until being appointed bishop of Matagalpa in 1991. He was appointed archbishop of Managua in April 2005.
Cardinal Brenes is said to personify the image of a humble shepherd of "a Church that is poor and for the poor." On his trip to Rome earlier this year, he is remembered as the cardinal-designate who traveled in blue jeans.
