“Catechesis and the Proclamation of the Word” is the theme for this year’s Catechetical Sunday, which is set for Sept. 20. Catechetical Sunday is a special day in parish communities because men and women who have said “yes” to God’s call to be catechists are summoned forth to be commissioned by their pastors and community for this important ministry.

Catechetical Sunday is a great day for everyone in the parish, but especially for catechists, who renew their commitment with Jesus Christ, with the community they serve, with themselves and with those children, youths and adults entrusted to them this year.

What is a catechist? What is the role of a catechist? These are very good questions to ask ourselves from time to time. The General Directory for Catechesis tells us that “The Church awakens and discerns this divine vocation and confers the mission to catechize. The Lord Jesus invites men and women, in a special way, to follow him, teacher and formator of disciples.” (GDC 231)

Are YOU being called to be a catechist in your parish community? Are YOU being called to serve and minister, to be a witness to Jesus Christ, to pray and to build up your parish community? We tend to think that a catechist is only called to teach children who are preparing for a sacrament or who are in “in-between” - those non-sacramental grades during a given year. However, a catechist is called to minister to all who seek to deepen their faith, by means of a variety of parish efforts. To this end, programs such as family sessions, scripture study, RCIA, youth groups, and more are provided by the parish catechetical leader, who works in conjunction with dedicated volunteers.

Directors of religious education in many parishes have been hard at work praying for and recruiting catechists for this school year. Volunteers are also needed to work with parents, perhaps by presenting informal instruction in our faith while their children are being taught. In addition, extra assistance in the office, etc. is always welcome throughout the week. Catechists do not only teach formally in classroom settings, however. By their very example they proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Religious Education Department is sponsoring our annual “Catechetical Morning” for catechists. Anyely Garcia, my assistant and I, invite catechists from throughout the region to participate. It is a unique opportunity to come together and to be empowered by the Word of God and by the witness of so many catechists in the archdiocese.

WONDERFUL, Maria Jose! You so well remind me of my happiest of days in ministry, working with DREs and before that, as a parish Catechetical Leader. We are all called, indeed, to build up the Body of Christ in word and work and by the very witness of our presence. ''"Awesome"...and possible only through the sustenance of our common communion in the Lord.

[P.S. If anyone needs a part-time assistant (secretarial/ faith coordinator) please contact Maria Jose, who will direct me to you.]

Maria Jose,
Your comments serve as a reminder for us to be attentive to God's call of love and service. Throughout the archdiocese Jesus is known via numerous ways including parish Religious Education programs. We are called to evangelize; to spread the Good News. Thank you for reminding us of the importance catechesis has in our parishes. May the Lord continue to guide us as we serve our communities.
Blessings

Ever since the birth of Vatican 2 the church has tried changing for the people. I feel if it the people who need to change to the ways of the church. Since the lack of Priests and Sisters in te church we have to make a way so that people not trained in the exact same way a a priest or sister is trained to pass on the beliefs and dogma of the church...

I'm am so sad to see the removals of the railings and statues to remind us of Mother Mary, St Joseph and Jesus. The Chruch will deminish, slowly and surely. We see it every day in the news. It's a shame.

What we need are more priests and stop bending the laws of God to suite man...

What a surprise! Sister Rosa it is a surprise to hear from you on this blog. Yes, this blog is a great way to keep in touch with catechists, DREs, and anyone interested in Religious Education. In today's Media Age the use of media may be used for good or evil ends, but I hope to use it for the good ends. The National Directory for Catechesis states: "While the developments in communication technology present challenges and potential problems for catechetical leaders and catechists, they also present many promising opportunities to claim the message of Jesus Christ in engaging new ways to vast numbers of people who might otherwise never hear it" (no. 69)

I will pray to the Holy Spirit to inspire me with good articles and information that may be very helpful to our bloggers. Welcome aboard!

Dear Carole, thank you for your reply in my first blog. The blog is one way to communicate and reach out to DREs and catechists in our own Archdiocese of Miami. On our www.miamiarchdiocese.org/ReligiousEducation website we have the story that Florida Catholic Newspaper wrote about last years Catechetical Morning. You were a fantastic Keynote Speaker. We have not forgotten what you said to us that day, Jesus transforms us. We do not take the word of God and reshape it to accommodate our lifestyle. We are always the disciple, never the Messiah. We are always the stand-in for the real teacher until he comes. Thank you for being with us.

Maria Jose - Thank you for pointing out that as adults we catechize by the way we live our lives of faith. Also that some adults are called to be catechists for other adults in a formal setting. I know many of our parishes are always looking for Catechists for the RCIA and for adults that are interested in facilitating broader adult faith formation at the parish.

This will be a great way to continuously stay in touch with the Archdiocese and especially meet those who work in the Archdiocese that we do not get to see or hear due to the fact that we are at the end of the Keys. It will help us to feel more connected and be a part of the greater picture that will involve other DRE's in the process. I look forward to opening my email and reading the blogs. Thank you so much for keeping us all in the loop.

Thank you for your blog! It let me to the USSB web site and the materials available for Catechetical Sunday. I'll be ordering some.
Hopefully, your blog will inspire and call some folks to help out in their parishes. Thank you again.
