Adrian Dominicans note deaths of two sisters who ministered in Florida

ADRIAN, Michigan | Two Adrian Dominican Sisters who served in South Florida have died in recent months.

Sister Barbara Gass, who taught at Barry College (now University) from 1967 to 1977, died March 23, 2020. She was 93 and in the 75th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Margaret "Marge" Mehigan, who worked as guidance director at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale from 1968 to 1971, died May 19, 2020. She was 93 and in her 74th year of religious profession.

Both died at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan, and were buried at the congregation's cemetery there.

Sister Barbara was born in Wyandotte, Michigan, and received a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a Master of Arts degree in teaching from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.

She spent 36 years ministering in education in Detroit, Rockwood and Southgate, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; Cincinnati, Assumption and Toledo, Ohio; and Miami Shores, Florida. She then worked in the congregation’s central offices, volunteered at the Neighbors Caring Clinic in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, the Siena Heights University Archive, and St. Catherine Library at the Motherhouse in Adrian.

Sister Margaret was born in Chicago, Illinois, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Siena Heights College (University) and a Master of Education degree in guidance and counseling from De Paul University in Chicago. She was also certified as a chaplain by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.

She spent 38 years ministering in education, counseling and pastoral work in Detroit, Michigan; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Kingman, Arizona; Des Moines, Iowa; Santurce, Puerto Rico; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and Chicago, Blue Island, and Streator, Illinois. She also ministered in congregation leadership positions in Santa Cruz, California; Hometown, Illinois; and Adrian, Michigan.
