Archbishop Wenski to chair U.S. bishops' committee on domestic justice

Miami (November 13, 2013) Although he was not elected president of the U.S. bishops' conference, Archbishop Thomas Wenski is walking away from the bishops' meeting this week with two new assignments: chairman of the bishops' committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development and member of the board of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC).

Archbishop Wenski has been serving as chair-elect of the domestic justice committee and now succeeds the current chair, Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton, California. The committee advises the bishops on issues of human dignity, development and poverty, including abortion, health care and the death penalty. It also oversees the work of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

CLINIC promotes the dignity and protects the rights of immigrants in partnership with a network of Catholic and community legal immigration programs.

Archbishop Wenski and eight other bishops on the short list of nominees for president lost out to Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, who has served as vice-president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for the past three years under the outgoing president, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York.

Archbishop Kurtz now succeeds Cardinal Dolan as the face and voice of the Catholic Church in the United States. His vice-president will be Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, Texas.

The election was held at the bishops' annual fall General Assembly, taking place from November 11-14 in Baltimore.
