MIAMI | Monsignor John Glorie, former pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Pompano Beach, died Aug. 6 in West Palm Beach. He was 93 years old.
Besides long service in parish administration before his 2001 retirement, Monsignor Glorie held leadership roles in a variety of notable ministries throughout his lifetime, including in Catholic education, the Catholic Service Bureau (now Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami), and archdiocesan leadership.
John William Patrick Glorie was born July 25, 1933 in Chester, New York. When he was young, his father and younger brother passed away, and he and his mother moved to West Palm Beach in 1944.
He attended St. Ann’s High School in West Palm Beach from fifth grade onwards. After discerning the priesthood, he was ordained by Bishop Coleman Carroll May 21, 1960 at St. Anthony Parish in Fort Lauderdale.
He was a priest for over 65 years.
His first assignment was as parochial vicar at St. Anastasia Parish in Fort Pierce (1960-61). He would then serve St. Anthony Parish, where he had been ordained, until 1962. He held the position of parochial vicar at three other parishes across South Florida until becoming administrator at St. Timothy Parish in Miami in 1969.
In 1973, Pope Paul VI made him Prelate of Honor (monsignor).
He served as pastor of St. Hugh, Miami (1973-82), Church of the Little Flower, Coral Gables (1982-89), as administrator of San Pablo, Marathon (1989-91), and as administrator and then pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Pompano Beach (1991-2001).
His ministry extended beyond parish life. He also served as chaplain and director at Boystown, a residential facility for teen boys, and as associate director of the Catholic Service Bureau (Catholic Charities). He was also archdiocesan director of the Catholic Bishops’ Overseas Aid Fund.
Monsignor Glorie was also an educator. He served as assistant to the diocesan superintendent of schools in charge of special education (1963-64) and earned a master’s degree in special education at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. (1965). In the 1960s, he was instrumental in founding the Marian Center for Children with Disabilities in Opa Locka. He was also assistant supervising principal at Immaculata-La Salle High School, Miami (1966-68).
For his assistance with organizing one of Pope John Paul II’s U.S. papal visits, Monsignor Glorie was honored by President Ronald Reagan and Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy.
Even after retiring in 2001, Monsignor Glorie continued to assist at St. Henry Parish in Pompano Beach.
