¿Qué les parece? ¿Verdad que somos especiales? Sí. Lo. Somos. No importa cuán humildes o sosegados puedan ser algunos de nosotros, lo creemos. Nuestras acciones lo demuestran: nuestros niños reciben trofeos por participar; pasamos por la fila expreso con más de 10 artículos porque seguro que pueden hacer una excepción con nosotros; luego hacemos cola para comprar los boletos de Powerball y Mega Millions a pesar de que sabemos que las probabilidades están en contra nuestra.

La tarjeta de alerta, AAA, recuerda a los párrocos y demás personal de la iglesia cuáles son los pasos a seguir si son testigos o se les informa de un posible abuso de niños o adultos vulnerables.

Para un boleto ganador reciente de Powerball, ¡las probabilidades eran de 292 millones a 1! Tenemos más probabilidades de morir por el impacto de un asteroide (cerca de 75 millones a 1) o fulminados por un rayo (1.1 millones a 1) o hasta de convertirnos en estrellas de cine (1. 5 millones a 1). De todos modos, gastamos el dinero que hemos ganado con mucho esfuerzo en una oportunidad de tropecientos a uno porque pensamos que podemos ser esa persona especial que gane.

Entonces, ¿qué hay de malo? Después de todo, somos creados únicos. Bueno, a veces nos olvidamos de que todos estamos creados de manera única y especial. No hay pedestal para engreírse. El verdadero regalo es regocijarse en el hecho de que todos somos únicos y especiales de alguna manera. Hay que celebrarlo y hacer todo lo posible para que prospere en los demás.

Cuando se trata de los niños, significa hacer todo lo posible por protegerlos, de manera que puedan crecer, aprender y prosperar con seguridad. La Política de Ambiente Seguro de la Arquidiócesis de Miami fue creada precisamente para eso. De acuerdo con la Carta de la Conferencia de Obispos de los EE. UU. para la Protección de Niños y Jóvenes, la política requiere, entre otras cosas, que todo el clero, religiosos y empleados en cualquier capacidad, y todos los voluntarios con acceso a los niños y/o adultos vulnerables, sean autorizados en nuestra base de datos a través de la toma de huellas dactilares; que tengan una cuenta de Virtus activa y actualizada; y que firmen la Promesa para Promover el Ambiente Seguro.

Estas son soluciones basadas en los mejores métodos para garantizar que quienes tienen acceso a los más vulnerables entre nosotros sean apropiados, estén calificados y tengan presente el mejor interés del niño. Es una tarea enorme en alcance, recursos, finanzas, compromiso y emociones, pero no hacerlo es mucho más costoso. Si los resultados salvan a un solo niño, vale la pena.

A la Oficina de Ambiente Seguro se le ha realizado una auditoría anual independiente desde que se promulgó la Carta en 2002, para determinar qué tan bien seguimos las políticas. La Arquidiócesis de Miami ha pasado la auditoría todos los años. A través de este proceso, sabemos que el programa funciona, y a muchos hemos ayudado y salvado de un terrible tormento.

Por otra parte, están aquellos de los que quizás nunca sepamos, que pudieron cambiar sus circunstancias debido a la información que recibieron en su capacitación o la capacitación de niños a través de las lecciones Para Enseñar Límites de Seguridad, de Virtus.

Un componente clave del éxito de la política es que no hay excepciones, no importa cuán especiales seamos. Algunos grupos de personas pueden sentir que no tienen que cumplir debido a su formación y/o estatus profesional. Los médicos, enfermeras, paramédicos, agentes del orden público y políticos pueden sentir que su capacitación ya es suficiente, incluso excepcional.

Sin embargo, necesitamos que estas personas cumplan y den el ejemplo a otros. Necesitamos que sepan qué información se está difundiendo a todos los demás, y que reconozcan cuándo algo no es aceptable según la política arquidiocesana. Necesitamos que estas personas compartan sus conocimientos durante las discusiones en las sesiones de capacitación de Virtus. Necesitamos que estas personas se unan a nuestros esfuerzos. En el bautismo estamos llamados a cuidarnos unos a otros. No se me ocurre un llamado más especial.

An important point that you mentioned, is that the key to the success of this program is... everyone needs fingerprints, Virtus, and signed pledge... no exceptions!

Besides to remain us the uniqueness of each one of us, touch the hard point of those who feel they do not need to comply. How many times we hear of the terrible things doing for a person that we thought was a "safe adult"? What I like more is that we have a program that help us with the prevention of abuse to children and/or vulnerable adults and that is a global program, all of us in our catholic faith we have to follow it, doesn't matter who you are. That is a step forward preventing abuse and because we need to keep updated we learn what is happening in our children world and we are wiser thanks to that.

You're absolutely correct, I can't think of a more special calling either. I have had countless participants approach me after classes and share with me their heartfelt stories and reinforce our message vigilance and reporting the actions of individuals that endanger those most vulnerable to exploitation.

I think that Virtus I appropriate for everyone including mandated reporters. It encourages us to specifically think about our parish and how we keep children safe in this environment.
