Two schools honored in reading program

MIAMI | Two archdiocesan schools – Mary Help of Christians in Parkland and St. Bonaventure in Davie – have received National Honor Roll status from the Renaissance education support company for use of its Accelerated Reader and other programs.

Mary Help of Christians reported 68 students from grades 2 to 8 achieving Million Word status this academic year. Eleven students read more than two million words, and six read over three million words, according to a school release.

Another 40 pupils earned the Bookworm Bunch Award, defined as 100,000 words for grade 1 students, 250,000 for grade 2 students and 500,000 for grade 3 students.

Cited on the organization’s Honor Roll Page were Alexandra Fernandez, MHOC principal, and Mary Suppe, a second-grade teacher and chair of the elementary department.

Also on the honors list were Lisa Kempinski, principal at St. Bonaventure School, and Lisa Capon, an instructional coach there. The only other Florida educator on the list was Shonda Hill at Venice Christian School in Southwest Florida.

The National Honor Roll program includes eight monthly challenges published August through March, providing data to show student growth in reading. Renaissance also offers a system called Star Assessments to track and aid student in reading, math and other areas.

MHOC’s Suppe was quoted on the Renaissance website as well. “I believe that reading is not just knowledge for your brain, but nourishment for your soul,” she said.
