MIAMI | The Varsity Sabrettes dance team walked into their first national competition feeling like "little fish in a big pond,” according to their head coach. But they walked out with a first-place award as Small Jazz Champions at the Universal Dance Association nationals.

“We were extremely nervous,” Head Coach Sahara Munoz said of the St. Brendan High School seniors during the UDA competition April 22-23 in Lake Buena Vista, on the grounds of Walt Disney World. Her advice to the dancers: “Make a big splash.”

The “Ace 8,” as the eight senior dancers are nicknamed, also won first place in jazz at the recent nationals of the Dance Team Union (DTU). At that competition, held at Disney’s Wide World Sports complex, they won second place in lyrical dancing and fourth in hip-hop.

The junior varsity Sabrettes made their own splash, taking second place for jazz dancing and third in hip-hop at the UDA nationals. At the DTU national competition, also held April 22-23 at Disney World, the JVs placed first in contemporary, plus second in jazz, lyrical and hip-hop.

Both teams excelled in regional contests as well.

Because of the COVID pandemic, the dancers couldn't perform at events such as pep rallies and sports games. They did, however, get to livestream a recital on May 14, as a farewell to the eight graduating senior Sabrettes.
