Elsa Reus, development and community relations director for Our Lady of the Lakes School, was honored with a 2021 Women of Distinction Award by the Town of Miami Lakes.

Reus was selected by members of the town’s Cultural Affairs Committee in the volunteer category. The Women of Distinction Award recognizes women who have made outstanding contributions to the community through their work and achievements.

Eight women were recognized this year in the categories of arts, business, civic affairs, education, government, health services, humanitarian aid, and volunteer services. The presentation ceremony took place March 6, 2021 at the Town Hall.

“Over 35 years ago, I became a parishioner at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church and then a founding parent of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School,” Reus wrote in her acceptance speech. “It was there that my passion for volunteering truly began. I was blessed to be surrounded by the most incredible families, who in turn all helped grow this beautiful town, when it was just cows and open land. I have seen it grow into what it is today all because of the power of a volunteer.”

Reus recently announced she will be retiring June 30, 2021 after 23 years as development director and director of community relations at Our Lady of the Lakes Church and School. “It was a decision that took me three years to make but I feel it is the right time for me and my family,” she said.

Nevertheless, as she noted upon receiving the award, “I will l never stop serving and volunteering in this beautiful town.”
