MHOC reading program makes honor roll

PARKLAND | Mary Help of Christians School has been named to the Renaissance National Honor Roll for Outstanding Performance in Advancing Students’ Achievement in Reading.

Renaissance recognizes educators around the nation who run reading practice programs successfully and have helped their students meet or exceed data targets for to significant student growth.

MHOC earned its place on the honor roll by applying the Renaissance Accelerated Reader program, which teaches students from kindergarten through twelfth grade in independent reading practice.

School administrators calculate that their students have read a total of nearly 19,000 books during the current school year -- almost 300 million words. The students read an average of 30 minutes a day.

Students who read 15 minutes or more a day see gains higher than the national average, according to Renaissance Learning.
