Creighton method aids couples experiencing infertility

MIAMI | Often, when people think of NFP, they think of the Catholic way to avoid pregnancy, but the Creighton Model can offer more than that for women with different gynecologic or reproductive health conditions.

Some are single women who wish to get to the root of a problem, rather than hearing another doctor only offer them birth control pills to manage symptoms. Others are couples who have struggled with infertility for a while and wish to be several steps ahead in the evaluation and eventual treatment of their condition by keeping a chart.

“It's a wonderful science that empowers women to take control of their fertility, yet supports the dignity of women and marriage,” said Creighton Model practitioner Sarah McKeown, a nurse at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

She explained in an email that Creighton is especially helpful for couples struggling with infertility because the way that the mucus patterns are charted serves as a very sensitive biomarker for assessing normal versus abnormal reproductive function.

“This is referred to as NaProTechnology a system which cooperates with the procreative mechanisms in evaluating the condition and producing a form of treatment which corrects the condition, maintains the human ecology, and sustains the procreative potential. NaPro stands for natural and procreative,” said McKeown.

To begin charting with the Creighton Model, potential clients attend a one-hour introductory session held at various locations. From there, they can receive supplies to chart and establish a personal schedule of eight private follow-ups over a year.
