St. John Neumann School principal Maria Elena Vilas is retiring this June after 38 years in Catholic education.

Vilas began teaching at St. John Neumann 38 years ago, using the church’s current kitchen as her classroom. She quickly became assistant principal but continued to teach her beloved middle school social studies students. Her passion has always been and continues to be the art of teaching.

“Mrs. Vilas is the heart of St. John Neumann School. Words cannot describe the impact she has had on all of her students and colleagues in her 38 years of service to Catholic education,” said a note posted on the parish website. “She has been a true mentor and friend to all who have walked through our school doors.”

“We rejoice with her and her family in knowing that as she slows down, she will be able enjoy the fruits of her life’s work, but also feel hesitation in knowing that a huge part of St. John Neumann Catholic School will be leaving us this June,” the note continued. “We pray God showers you with continued blessings as you enter this next phase of your life.”
