FORT LAUDERDALE | Cardinal Gibbons High School secured three Silver Knight Awards at the 68th Annual Silver Knight Awards presented by the Miami Herald – the most Silver Knight wins in the school’s history and the highest total earned by any Catholic school in Miami-Dade and Broward counties this year.
The Silver Knight Award, established in 1959, is among the nation’s most distinguished secondary school recognition programs, honoring graduating seniors who demonstrate exceptional scholarship alongside sustained leadership and community service. Winners are selected through competitive evaluation by independent panels of judges across 15 academic and co-curricular categories.
This year’s Silver Knight winners from Cardinal Gibbons are Lucas Himawan in Drama, Katelyn Jagelman in Journalism, and Mia Moyano in Vocational Technical.
Five additional Cardinal Gibbons seniors received Honorable Mention distinctions. Brandon Clarke was recognized in Digital and Interactive Media, Camilla Escobar in World Languages, Lydia Berent in Athletics, Emerald Hart in Art, and Kyla Dunn in Music and Dance.
Silver Knight winners receive a $2,000 scholarship and the program’s namesake statue. Honorable Mention recipients receive a $500 scholarship and an engraved plaque. Scholarship support is provided in part by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The program is open to public, private and parochial school seniors in Miami-Dade and Broward counties who maintain a minimum unweighted 3.2 GPA.
“This recognition affirms what we see in these students every day: an uncommon integration of intellectual rigor, servant leadership and character,” said Oscar Cedeño, principal. “They represent the highest aspirations of a Cardinal Gibbons education.”
The school also thanked Dr. Jane Spanich, Silver Knight Coordinator, for her unwavering commitment to guiding students throughout the nomination and selection process.
