COCONUT GROVE | Under the banner of KIDS4KIDS, a group of St. Hugh students scored a hat trick in service: They promoted Red Ribbon Week, raised funds for their school, and raised funds for less fortunate children.
The St. Hugh students gathered Fridays and Saturdays to hand-bead red bracelets, which they sold for $2 each during Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31.
By purchasing these bracelets, their fellow St. Hugh students were reminded of their commitment to being drug-free. At the same time, they were helping their school and the children who attend The Barnyard after-school program in Coconut Grove Village West.
St. Hugh students put together approximately 280 bracelets and raised $560. The proceeds will be allocated in equal parts to school improvements at St. Hugh and the reading program at the Barnyard.
KIDS4KIDS mission is to provide service to others, and promote awareness among children of the needs of their peers as well as of community resources that can help them create an effective service project.
The St. Hugh students involved in the Red Ribbon beading project were: Solange Aguero, Carolina Lizama, Mia Trent, Ana Colitto, Helene Lobree, Olivia Samur and Bella and Chelsea Pennekamp, co-founders of St. Hugh’s Kids4Kids chapter.
