MIAMI (Sept. 27, 2022) | Due to worsening conditions and increased flooding due to the arrival of Hurricane Ian in Florida, Catholic schools and parish offices in the tri-county Archdiocese of Miami — Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe — will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022.
“In an abundance of caution, the Pastoral Center, along with parish offices and our archdiocesan schools, will be closed for normal operations,” wrote Sister Elizabeth Worley, archdiocesan chancellor for administration, in an email sent around 1 p.m. to Pastoral Center staff.
“While Miami Dade and Broward counties are not in the direct path of the hurricane, the possibility, or probability, of tropical storm force gusts or sustained winds continues – and with the deluge of rain, flooding remains a concern in some areas of the counties,” Sister Elizabeth wrote.
The plan for now is to reopen on Thursday, as archdiocesan Schools Superintendent Jim Rigg wrote in his letter to school parents, which he posted on his Twitter account around noon.
“We are planning for schools to be open on Thursday, however we will continue to follow all local advisories related to the storm. If this decision changes we will inform families and employees as soon as possible,” Rigg wrote. “Keep in mind that Catholic schools do not follow the decisions of local public school districts, although district decisions are important factors as we consider our options.”
Updates will be posted on the archdiocesan website — miamiarch.org — and communicated to parents and parishioners via email or texts, social media, and on school and parish websites.
“In the meantime, please remain safe and pray for those in harm’s way, especially the people of the Dioceses of Venice and St. Petersburg, many of whom are evacuating their homes in the face of the substantial threat of Hurricane Ian’s storm surge and flooding,” Sister Elizabeth wrote.
