MIAMI | Funeral services will take place Monday, Dec. 1 at San Isidro Church in Pompano Beach for Father Ignacio Morrás, 88, who died on Thanksgiving evening, Nov. 27, after decades of service in the Archdiocese of Miami.

Father Morrás was born in Navarra, Spain, and had been a priest for 65 years, most of those in South Florida. He was the younger brother of Msgr. Xavier Morrás, who died in November 2012, and came from a family where five of six siblings entered religious life: another brother was an Augustinian and two sisters became cloistered nuns.

Like his brother, Father Ignacio Morrás chose to be a missionary priest — moving from his native diocese in Spain to a quickly growing part of Florida which was in dire need of Spanish-speaking priests. Ordained June 11, 1949, he spent a decade as a missionary in Chile before coming to the archdiocese in February 1965.

He served as parochial vicar at St. Michael in Miami from 1965-1966 and at Little Flower in Coral Gables from 1966-1972.

His last assignment was as pastor of St. Kevin Church in Miami (1978-1989), during which he oversaw the completion of the church building. He had served as administrator of St. Kevin for six years prior, from 1972 until being named pastor in 1978.

Artistically talented, he also contributed many of the artistic appointments of St. Kevin Church and School, such as gates and lamp holders crafted from wrought iron.

For six months in 1992, he served as administrator of St. James in North Miami. He retired in February 1994 and spent most of his retirement years in residence at St. John the Apostle Church in Hialeah.

The viewing will take place Monday from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at San Isidro Church, 2310 Martin Luther King Blvd., Pompano Beach. Funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will take place afterward at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery in Miami.

Oh my goodness...he did so much more than this. He had the vision to build the school before the new church building. He designed everything in the old church, now parish hall, and in the church building, including the stained glass windows, and made some of them himself, like the one with the "Our Father". But most importantly, he stayed within budget for both the school and the church, leaving our parish DEBT FREE ... and so much more!
