MIAMI Students from Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High Schools Support the Troops/Soldiers Angels Club have launched their eighth annual Beanies for Baghdad drive for children in the Middle East.
Club members ask school students to donate small stuffed toys, soccer balls and school supplies so that soldiers stationed overseas can distribute them to children in Iran, Afghanistan and Kosovo.
Soldiers Angels is also requesting monetary donations to cover the postage and delivery costs. The students hope to find an individual or business sponsor who can either offset or completely cover the cost of postage.
The Support the Troops/Soldiers Angels club meets every Tuesday at the school to honor the men and women fighting abroad to protect this countrys freedom.
It is our mission to let those brave people know we support and honor them, said David Monaco, club moderator and Curley-Notre Dame history, government, and economics teacher.
Curley-Notre Dames KASA Nova Group 16, led by seniors Sherman Alcius, Jefferson Lopez and Emily Stobbs and freshman Milienne Bonenfant, adopted soldier Melissa A. Behnkendorf, stationed in Afghanistan.
The group is currently collecting items to send her and her troops to let them know we are thinking about them, said Monaco.
