The Community of St. John Paul II

Tuesday, Feb 18, 2020 from 7:45 PM to 9:45 PM - English

The Community of St. John Paul II invites you to our new prayer and study group inspired by the life, spirituality and writings of St. John Paul II. We are happy to announce that we are now meeting every Tuesday of the month.

Our Mission: To deepen our Catholic faith, to respect and defend the sacredness of life, to live the fullness of the Gospel message, to promote the new evangelization and grow in greater love of God and neighbor as taught and exemplified by Pope St. John Paul II. As St. John Paul II repeatedly said, "Be not afraid! Open wide the doors to Christ." We seek to open the doors to Christ of the new evangelization in all the dimensions of human life: family, marriage, work, social, cultural, artistic, intellectual, historical... all in and for Christ.

Please join us every Tuesday of the month at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, at 7:45 p.m., room #206 of the school. We are excited to explore and study the rich intellectual and spiritual legacy of St. John Paul II and the Catholic Magisterium, including that of the great popes and teachers of our holy Church throughout the ages.

Please join us for a spiritual and intellectual adventure in Christ, with the Church and St. John Paul II to guide us.

Additional projects: Rosary for Life: "Life is a gift, not a choice!

Lumen Gentium: The People of God

Tuesday, Feb 18, 2020 from 7:45 PM to 9:30 PM - English

Lumen Gentium - Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Vatican II

Part II: The People of God & the Episcopate

On the 21st of November, 1964, Pope St. Paul VI promulgated the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church know as Lumen Gentium, “Light of the Nations.” Considered one of the principal documents of the Second Vatican Council, it sought to clarify and affirm the sacred mission, nature, and authority of the Church to bring the Light of Christ to the whole of humanity and thus attain fuller unity in Christ.

As the opening proclaims in Ch.1, “Mystery of the Church”:

1. Christ is the Light of nations. Because this is so, this Sacred Synod gathered together in the Holy Spirit eagerly desires, by proclaiming the Gospel to every creature, to bring the light of Christ to all men, a light brightly visible on the countenance of the Church. Since the Church is in Christ like a sacrament or as a sign and instrument both of a very closely knit union with God and of the unity of the whole human race, it desires now to unfold more fully to the faithful of the Church and to the whole world its own inner nature and universal mission. This it intends to do following faithfully the teaching of previous councils. The present-day conditions of the world add greater urgency to this work of the Church so that all men, joined more closely today by various social, technical and cultural ties, might also attain fuller unity in Christ.

Please join us as we prayerfully reflect on Lumen Gentium, Chapters:

  • 2 The People of God and
  • 3 The Hierarchical Structure of the Church

Our Lady of Loreto visits Miami

Tuesday, Feb 18, 2020 at 7:30 PM - Bilingual (English and Spanish)

Father Giovanni Soccorso, the chaplain for the Fiumicino airport chapel in Rome and the delegate for the jubilee of Our Lady of Loreto, has informed the Archdiocese of Miami that the chaplain for the airport of Madrid, Father Urbano Monedero, is coming to Miami with the statue of Our Lady of Loreto on Monday, Feb. 17.

The plan is to welcome the statue with a Mass at the airport chapel shortly after his arrival. Mass will be celebrated at 5:30 p.m. in the airport's South Terminal Concourse J - 4th floor auditorium. This has been designated a place to gain plenary indulgence under the conditions listed below.

The statue of Our Lady of Loreto will then be brought to Blessed Trinity Church in Miami Springs, where it will remain on Tuesday, Feb. 18, with a Mass at 7:30 p.m. All are invited to attend both Masses.

From December 8, 2019 to December 10, 2020, the universal church is celebrating the Lauretan Jubilee in commemoration of the centenary of the proclamation of Our Lady of Loreto as the patroness of aviation. The church has granted a plenary indulgence to the Miami airport chapel during this year to those who fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Be in the state of grace.
  2. Have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin.
  3. Have sacramentally confessed their sins (20 days before or after having received Communion for this indulgence).
  4. Receive the Holy Eucharist.
  5. Pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff.
  6. Pray for the spread of our faith before a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary concluding with an Our Father, the Creed, and a Hail Mary (or praying the Litany of Our Lady of Loreto).

The title Our Lady of Loreto refers to the Holy House of Loreto, the house in which Mary was born, and where the Annunciation occurred, and to an ancient statue of Our Lady which is found there.

Tradition says that a band of angels scooped up the little house from the Holy Land, and transported it first to Tersato, Dalmatia, in 1291, then Recanati, Italy, in 1294, and finally to Loreto, Italy, where it has been for centuries.

It was this flight that led to her patronage of people involved in aviation, and the long life of the house that has led to the patronage of builders, construction workers, etc. It is the first shrine of international renown dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, and has been known as a Marian center for centuries.

Popes have always held the Shrine of Loreto in special esteem, and it is under their direct authority and protection.

Identical twins, Fathers Charles and Chester Smith, SVD, say they want their journey to the priesthood from a Chicago housing project to be an example of hope for young blacks.

"People look toward us as a sign of hope. People see us and see men who didn’t have the best things growing up, make some good of their lives and they say, maybe I can do that,” said Father Charles Smith.

The Smiths, the first black twins to become Roman Catholic priests in the United States, were ordained together April 16, 1988. They are members of the Society of the Divine Word religious order and the Bowman-Francis Ministry Project that serves the Black Catholic Diaspora. They work for the spiritual development and betterment of health and elevated quality of life for all people of African descent. They have traveled the world to provide hope to youth, young adults and adults, through conferences, revivals, retreats, leadership workshops, and books.
