The Archdiocese of Miami joyfully welcomes the excitement of the FIFA World Cup 2026 to our city!

Hard Rock Stadium, home of our Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes football teams (the other football), will host seven, SEVEN! World Cup matches! The highly anticipated schedule for the Miami Gardens stadium includes group-stage games featuring powerhouses like Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, and Portugal, plus knockout-round matches through the bronze medal final.

This global event brings the world to South Florida. Miami’s vibrant communities from Latin America and beyond will proudly support their teams, filling our streets with flags, songs, and shared joy.

A Catholic Passion for the Beautiful Game

Soccer unites many nations with deep Catholic roots. Argentina, the defending champions (winners of the 2022 FIFA World Cup), boast a strong Catholic heritage, as do Brazil (holder of a record five World Cup titles), Colombia, Uruguay, and Portugal. Many of these countries have Catholic majorities or significant Catholic populations, and their fans carry faith traditions that echo those found in our own parishes.

Here in Miami, large communities from these nations call South Florida home. Whether you’re cheering for La Albiceleste, La Celeste, or La Canarinha, this is a wonderful moment to celebrate our shared cultural and spiritual bonds. Gather with family and friends, enjoy the matches responsibly, and remember the values of fair play, solidarity, and respect that our faith teaches us.

Staying Alert to the Shadows

While the World Cup inspires unity and excitement, major international tournaments can also attract darker elements. Organized crime networks sometimes target large events through activities such as illegal betting, match-fixing, money laundering, and exploitation, including human trafficking and other criminal enterprises.

As Catholics, we are called to vigilance and moral courage. The Church teaches us to avoid occasions of sin and to protect the dignity of every person. We encourage our communities to:

• Enjoy the festivities while steering clear of illegal gambling or suspicious betting schemes.

• Report any signs of exploitation, trafficking, or criminal activity to the authorities.

• Prioritize family, community, and prayer amid the excitement.

• Support ethical fan behavior and reject violence and hooliganism.

Let this World Cup strengthen our faith rather than tempt us away from it. Parishes across the Archdiocese may offer special events, prayer gatherings, or viewing parties—check with your local church for details.

A Call to Joyful Witness

Miami has the unique blessing of hosting the world while serving as a gateway for Catholic communities from across the Americas. Let us show the best of our faith: hospitality, joy, and integrity. Root for your teams with passion, but live with purpose.

May Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas, and St. Sebastian, patron of athletes, intercede for a safe, memorable, and grace-filled World Cup in our city.

May the best team win—and may peace reign in our hearts!

Anthony, Once again you remind us of what is important. A World Cup trophy--sure! Spending time with family, sharing our faith, fostering fair play and good sportsmanship--absolutely! Doing all we can to protect the vulnerable among us--more than anything! We are bound by our faith and called through baptism to look out for one another at all times. Not just when we sit in a pew, but in all we do. Including sitting in the hard plastic seats of a stadium (or at home in the comfort of our La-Z-Boy recliners)as the World Cup games regale us in tradition and pageantry and fantastic fútbol. Thank you!
