'Let us begin. Let us start afresh from Christ'

The last words of my installation homily were: “So let us begin. Let us start afresh from Christ.” These words were inspired by John Paul II’s Novo Milenio Ineunte, a reflection he published shortly after the Jubilee Year of 2000. This document is a rich resource – and those wishing to know where I will try to lead the Archdiocese could profit by a careful reading.
At any rate, we have begun. The installation Mass was a spectacular liturgy – and kudos to all who were involved in its planning and execution are well deserved! But one good thing deserves another – and another. So the installation Mass is being followed by a series of welcome Masses that so far are giving me the opportunity to reintroduce myself to the Catholics of South Florida. It’s amazing to me how many remember me – and, how many I remember, despite my having spent almost seven years in Central Florida.
I am impressed by the warm welcome given me; I was edified that after Mass people will queue through a long line patiently in order to give me their best wishes and sometimes some sage advice. And many came requesting prayers – even as they promised to pray for me. I remember tracing the sign of the cross over one lady’s forehead – requested by her husband since, as he told me, she was fighting brain cancer. Another mother pressed into my hand a card with the name of her son who was just killed in action in Afghanistan June 1st, the day of my installation. Two families – one from India and one from Colombia - shared with me their desperate plight: each had exhausted all appeals to forestall deportation back to their home countries. Several Hispanics petitioned me that I prevail on their pastor to initiate a weekly Spanish language Mass in their parish.
The people that have greeted me reflect the rich mosaic of cultures and languages that make up the Archdiocese of Miami. And in the brief moments of our encounters, they shared with me their joys and their hopes, their sorrows and their concerns. I was reminded of the opening words of the seminal document of the Second Vatican Council:
"The joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of the people of our time, especially of those who are poor or afflicted, are the joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of the followers of Christ as well."—Gaudium et Spes
For this reason, during these my first encounters as Archbishop with the faithful of this local Church, I am emphasizing our role as Catholics to be witnesses to hope in a world in which many find themselves bereft of hope. In Spe Salvi, Pope Benedict XVI said: “A world without God is a world without hope.” As Catholics here in South Florida and indeed throughout the world, we are called to point to the one hope that will never disappoint, the hope that is Jesus Christ.
As I said during my installation Mass homily: “Now is the time for us to assess our fervor and to find fresh enthusiasm for the spiritual and pastoral responsibilities that lie ahead.” And this brings me back to the last words of that homily which I cited at the beginning of this blog: “So let us begin. Let us start afresh from Christ.”

�Ante todo bienvenido a casa!
Debido a que estamos de vacaciones no hemos podido participar ni en su Misa de Instalaci�n como cuarto Arzobispo de Miami, ni en ninguna de las Misas de bienvenida que usted ha celebrado en los �ltimos d�as.
Ahora bien, hace unos d�as estando en Phoenix fuimos a la Catedral de los Santos Sim�n y Judas y all� en la que fuera la sede episcopal de nuestro nunca olvidado Arzobispo McCarthy y de la cual fue su primer obispo, en la Misa en que participamos tuvimos una oraci�n muy especial para usted y su ministerio episcopal en nuestra Iglesia local.
Al leer su blog, me he llenado de gran alegr�a y esperanza el ver como usted hace referencia al Documento Gaudium et Spes del Concilio Vaticano II. Ciertamente nos sentimos muy unidos a usted en proclamar que las alegr�as y las esperanzas, los dolores y tristezas de todos los hombres, especialmente los m�s pobres y olvidados deben ser nuestras propias alegr�as y esperanzas, nuestros propios dolores y tristezas si queremos ser verdaderos disc�pulos de Cristo.
Queremos asegurarle nuestras oraciones, su homil�a en la Misa de Instalaci�n, lo que hemos le�do en la prensa a trav�s del Internet, este propio blog, nos llenan de esperanza y optimismo, y alegres y con la paz que nos da el Se�or nos disponemos a este nuevo comienzo. Al recordarle en nuestras celebraciones Eucar�sticas el mencionar su nombre no ser� un mero requerimiento ritual sino que ser� un sentimiento que saldr� de nuestros corazones agradecidos por su nuevo Pastor.
Quisiera atreverme a pedirle algunas cosas, de antemano le pido disculpa por este atrevimiento:
1) No deje nunca de ser un sacerdote humilde y de oraci�n confiada.
2) Contin�e siendo un defensor de la dignidad de la persona humana, de la dignidad de los laicos en la Iglesia como bautizados, apoye nuestras ansias de evangelizaci�n y trabajar por la Iglesia como algo verdaderamente nuestra que es.
3) En alg�n momento le ruego vuelva a leer aquel documento que surgio a ra�z de nuestro Sinodo. �Qu� se ha logrado? �Qu� hemos olvidado y no hemos cumplido? �Qu� habr�a que recordar nuevamente y "meterle mano".
4) Estoy muy consciente de que usted tiene un gran sentido de lo que representa la Iglesia de Miami como puerta de comunicacion --no de separaci�n-- entre la Am�rica del Norte y las comunidades del Mar de las Antillas, Centro y Sur Am�rica. Le ruego que sea un "portero" celoso y diligente.
5) Por �ltimo quisiera rogarle que sea para todos nosotros -- para sus obispos auxiliares, sus sacerdotes, religiosos, laicos comprometidos, fieles en general y todos los que vivimos en este hermoso Sur de la Florida-- un verdadero pont�fice que construya puentes en nuestras relaciones y nuestro diario vivir y esfuerzos por la construcci�n del Reino de Dios.
Dios le bendiga y tambi�n quisiera ponerle bajo el manto protector de Nuestra Se�ora de la Caridad del Cobre, Copatrona de nuestra amada Arquidi�cesis.

Querido Arzobispo: sus impresiones personales y su experiencia personal en los encuentros con el pueblo de Dios me ha tocado profundamente.... Nuestra gente tiene hambre y ansia del cuidado de su pastor y los sacerdotes esperan al pastor gentil y misericordioso... Gracias por mostrarnos atravez de sus palabras, homilias y encuentros cercanos con el rebano de Dios como un pastor es con sus ovejas y lo que hace por ellas siempre... Usted conoce a sus ovejas y sus ovejas conocen su voz, porque su voz esta llena de esperanza, de nuevos horizontes y de paz.

All of us , the church, must do our part in evangelizing to bring back our God into our world.
