Me parece

Javier,

Thank you for all the prayers and support! You are absolutely right, "we can all do our part." Let us pray that more priests and laity realize this reality.

Father,

I'm glad you're finally blogging! It only took, oh, five years! LOL.

This was a great post and I think the key point is the "personal" aspect, which you've mentioned. The diocese can only do so much to recruit young men for the priesthood. We as individuals, especially those who work with teens and young adults, need to foster an atmosphere of love and respect for our priests to those around us. This is increasingly important as the institution of the priesthood comes under fire in the liberal media.

Young people need to know that priests are REAL people and that they have the same concerns, desires, wishes, as just about everyone else. We need to find ways to use technology and day-to-day encounters to introduce young people to life as a priest.

We can all do our part.

Have a teenage son? Invite your parish priest to dinner one night.

Involved in young adult ministry? Invite a priest to come and speak and give a personal testimony about his conversion experience.

Work in a parish? Organize an informal, fun days where young people can hang out with priests in a relaxed setting, like watching a movie, playing sports, having a picnic.

Got Facebook? Add as many priest friends as you can! Promote priestly podcasts (there are quite a few and they are great) and participate in priestly blogs (like this one).

We can all do little things to encourage interactions with our priests and by way of those interactions, introduce young people to Christ through our priests.

Finally, pray, pray pray! Pray for these men to stick to their vows, continue their servile way of life, and for courage to do the right thing in the midst of growing opposition to the priesthood.

Thanks Father, for a great post!

Brian,

Blessings to you and all at Catholic Hospice! Jesus is Resurrected, he did not stay in the tomb!!! Our faith is of life and not death. This I learned in a very special and concrete way, ministering with terminally ill children while on a chaplaincy assignment at Miami Children's Hospital. I try to live life to the fullest everyday. I agree we must "take this approach with God." God MUST be the focus of the our lives. God must be the center of my life, for God is life. At Mass we have been listening to the 15th chapter of John, where Jesus reminds us, "for you can do nothing without me." We must surrender to God for only in Him can things get done for the fullness of our human life. Let us pray that we would all seek to do what we must do, and to do it WITH GOD.

blessings,
Fr. Roberto

Daniel,

May you be strengthened in your openness to God's call. In being courageous a man will mature, thus he maybe young in age but if he is willing to allow himself to be formed in accordance to the call of God, I believe that he should walk the path of discernment to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ. Pray for me and I will pray that God may strengthen you desire to serve Him and His Church.

blessings,

Cheryl,

Thank you! I pray everday for the many who gather at the altar everdday, every Sunday, that we not focus on the darkness of this world, but rather on the light of Christ, the power of the Resurrection.

Luis,

A definite Godincidence, since I was not aware of the Vatican announcement. Join me in talking to all especially fellow parishioners of our need to pray for priest at Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and daily Mass.

Father Garza,
I am certain that it is NO mere coincidence that you post this topic and days later the Holy Father announces Indulgences for the Priestly Year.
http://212.77.1.245/news_services/bulletin/news/23844.php?index=23844&lang=it (Sorry I couldn't find it in English)

I especially like B, which encourages the faithful on certain days to assist at Mass with the intention of sanctifying priests and conforming them to His Heart. Talk about Active Participation! I hope this Decretum is announced and promoted in every parish together with Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament for the promotion of vocations from our parishes, from our sons.

Father Garza:
You seem to be on to a new and refreshing approach to vocation work. Using this section of Cardinal Van Thuan's reterat as an approach to vocations holds promise.

Imagine a brochure saying that : "Jesus is making you an offer you can't refuse. What is that offer? A life of trials, persecutions, afflictions and revilement. In exchange, you will be able to make Christ present through the Eucharist and through your presence. Are you enough of a risk-taker to learn more about this offer? Come and See."

May Jesus bless your ministry.

Padre Roberto,
Muchas bendiciones.

Thank you Fr. Garza. It is time to stop stewing on the situation we are in and instead change the conversation to personal responsibility to make the situation better.
Daniel Mulieri - 05/12/2009 01:37 AM
Fr. Garza,
Your statements are true. We must hear the call of our Lord. I am 19 years old and have heard Him call me to the Priesthood. Although many people have told me that I should not do this that it is too early, I tell them you do not understand how he works. The Lord gives you signs that you must see and comprehend what he wants to do with you. When I received my Call it was like the Angels in heaven were shining on me at that moment. It was truely a special moment in my life. At first I thought that it was just a weird feeling and that it was because it was Holy Week, but I Prayed for years about it and asked God to give me the wisdom to understand what he was really trying to tell me. After much thought and Consideration I have decided that this is the right path for me and that the Lord really wanted for me to this. I encourage all young men to see the signs that God puts infront of them. Pope Benedict XVI said in a youth day speech in Sydney, Australia; "All young men must have courage and step up to what the Lord wants for you" This to me was very powerful , he is saying that no matter what is going on in society you must follow the path God has prepared for you.

Sincerely,
Daniel Marco Mulieri

Father Garza, I could not agree with you more. Your statement, "With all due respect, we can no longer sit around focused on the negativity of our times and the errors of the past." This fact will always exist no matter if it is in regards to the decrease in vocations, discrimination by 'others', judgmental personalities, lack of appropriate care for the poor, weak financial times, and many more examples not worth mentioning. We all need to focus on the future and what WE can do to make the future more positive.

John F. Kennedy said it best, "The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globethe belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God....Ask not what your country can do for youask what you can do for your country." We need to take this approach with God, our ministries and our future. As individuals, we only control our own actions, but we do have the ability to influence those of others....so we should take the initiative and make living life as positive as we can. Who knows what tomorrow holds?
