New director named for catechesis

Sister Karen Muñiz previously served at Mother of Christ and St. Timothy

Sister Karen Muniz, of the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary, has been appointed archdiocesan director of the Office of Catechesis.

MIAMI | Sister Karen Muñiz, of the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary, has been named director of the Office of Catechesis. She succeeds Peter Ductram, who moved to the Archdiocese of San Antonio at the end of August.

Born in Managua, Nicaragua, Sister Karen came to the U.S. at age 3 and has lived in Miami ever since. She made her first profession of vows Aug. 22, 2008. Sister Karen formerly taught religion at Mother of Christ in Miami and served as director of religious education at St. Timothy in Miami.

She is fluent in English, Spanish and French and will work to assist parishes in forming knowledgeable catechists with the skill to instruct others in the Catholic faith as well as serve as authentic witnesses to the faith. Sister Karen also will provide leadership in forming, implementing, updating and revising the curriculum for parish programs of catechesis. Her office is part of the Secretariat of Education, led by Kim Pryzbylski.
