Archbishop Thomas Wenski preached this homily at a 10th anniversary Mass for the Emmaus group at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Doral, May 25, 2021.
Today’s Gospel ends with the disciples of Emmaus returning to Jerusalem and the upper room where the apostles are gathered. They tell the others how they met Jesus along the road and how they finally recognized him “in the breaking of the bread.”
We can see perhaps how much those disciples were just like us; or perhaps how much we are just like them. They were slow to believe — and for many of us, our journey to faith was a slow one as well. Like those disciples we too perhaps failed to recognize Jesus; like them, we too were “troubled” and had hearts “full of questions.” But like them, we moved from utter incomprehension to greater comprehension, from despairing disbelief to trusting faith, from despair to renewed hope. Like those disciples on the road to Emmaus you too encountered Christ – thanks to your Emmaus experience.
Muchos de nuestros contemporáneos todavía viven sin esperanza. Pues, no conocen a Jesucristo Resucitado de entre los muertos. Yo diría que el mayor problema del mundo en que vivimos es la pérdida de esperanza.
Por ejemplo, la adicción a las drogas es solo un síntoma de esa carencia de esperanza; el alto nivel de abortos en esta comunidad de Miami (casi 30% de abortos en el estado de la Florida ocurren aquí en Miami-Dade) es también otro síntoma de la falta de esperanza – pues los hijos son la esperanza del futuro; el creciente número de parejas que viven juntos, “no de por vida hasta la muerte sino de por el momento hasta que nos conviene”, es otro síntoma más de no tener esperanza – pues para hacer un compromiso de por vida, hay que creer en el futuro, ese futuro que se nos abre solamente cuando tengamos esperanza.
También podemos constar que hay muchas personas aquí en Miami que aunque son latinos desconocen ese tesoro que es la fe revelada en Jesucristo. En algunos casos, la culpa tiene el mismo hecho de haber emigrado y en el proceso han perdido contactos con las raíces religiosas de su cultura de origen. Para otros, y este grupo no es pequeño en nuestra comunidad de Miami, crecieron en una sociedad oficialmente atea. Y si una vez fueron defraudados por las falsas promesas de un materialismo ideológico, están tentados por las falsas promesas de un materialismo práctico que temprano o tarde también les dejará defraudados otra vez.
To have found Jesus — or rather that Jesus has found us — is a great gift, a gift that brings us both peace and joy and true hope.
Como dijo una vez el papa Benedicto, un mundo sin Dios es un mundo sin esperanza. Cuando el hombre pretende vivir como si Dios nos le importara, cuando una sociedad o un gobierno quieren organizarse sin tomar en cuenta a Dios, pierde la esperanza porque echar de un lado a Dios es cerrar las puertas hacia este futuro al que Dios nos llama.
We all walk together with the Lord in that fellowship of his disciples we call the Catholic Church. As you might have already noticed this Church is a big Church — she is made of many people — different languages, different cultures, different life experiences but we share one Lord, one faith, one baptism. And despite all our diversity and possible differences we all have one thing in common: We are all sinners saved by the blood of Christ shed for us on Calvary.
That sacrifice is re-presented in the Mass where, like those disciples of Emmaus, we recognize the Lord Jesus “in the breaking of the bread.” And with them we announce to the world the Lord has risen; he has risen indeed!
