MIAMI | Exploring the arts in the area close to Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Prep is part of the weekly educational opportunities included in the Summer Knights Visual and Performing Arts Camp.

During the first week of camp, the students visited the New World Center on Miami Beach where they were given a guided tour by Yuri Rebello, director of Guest Services, and Hillary Glen, a Fellow and cellist for the New World Symphony. The students learned about what it takes to become accepted into the prestigious symphony, the types of musical programs offered to the community, and a bit about the New World Center’s history.

Later, the students went to the Institute of Contemporary Art in the Design District. Crystal Molinary, ICA's Outreach Programs manager, and museum docents guided the tour. The exhibit presents a unique concept where visitors can purchase the art on display as they tour the gallery, by accessing the website GucciVuitton.biz on their smartphone.

The founders of GucciVuitton have curated a window shopping experience. Each "window" display, showcasing works by a few artists, addresses ideas such as the challenges artists face to make a living; advertising and mass consumption; and ways in which women are often perceived.

After viewing and discussing an exhibit of paintings by Ryan Sullivan, the students enjoyed making their own abstract works of art using fabric, plastic, and other found objects.

Last week’s camp session ended with an art activity led by instructors from the Perez Art Museum located in Downtown Miami. The students will also tour the Museum this week, and visit the de la Cruz Collection in the Design District next week.

At the Summer Knights Visual and Performing Arts Camp, students study painting and drawing in the morning, and drama in the afternoon. A sports camp is also available, with each week focusing on a different sport.

The cost is $100 per week with discounts for multiple weeks booked. Registration can be made online at www.acnd.net/SummerKnights.
