St. James students excel at reading

School named National Honor School by Renaissance Learning

NORTH MIAMI | This year, so far, students at St. James School have read more than 28,000 books and more than 190,000,000 words - an achievement that has won the school the title of Renaissance Learning National Honor School for achievement in reading.

The school's students take part in the Accelerated Reader Program, reading books and taking tests on them. To achieve National Honor Roll School status, 80 percent of the students must pass the tests on the books. At least 95 percent of students in the class must read with 85 percent accuracy for a period of at least six  months.

Six classes at St. James, from fourth through seventh grade, all achieved National Honor Class recognition.

"From the oldest to the youngest, students at St. James are using their reading skills to travel, investigate and imagine," said the school's principal, Sister Stephanie Flynn of the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine.

She thanked all the teachers, parents, and students for supporting reading at school and at home and added: "Our thanks go also to the Navarro Foundation and Navarro family for making participation in the Accelerated Reading Program possible, as well as, their continued support for literacy education at St. James."
