Miami Life Chain brings pro-life message to US 1

Catholics gather along US 1 for prayer and public witness on Respect Life Sunday

MIAMI | Holding pro-life signs and rosaries, Catholics lined US 1 in Miami on Oct. 4, joining a nationwide Life Chain demonstration to pray for unborn children and show support for women facing difficult pregnancies.

The annual event took place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Respect Life Sunday, the first Sunday of October. Organized locally by the Archdiocese of Miami's Respect Life Ministry, the demonstration stretched along US 1 from Kendall Drive to Le Jeune Road, drawing participants from parishes, Catholic schools and pro-life organizations across South Florida.

As Miami Life Chain Coordinator Madelyn Ocasio explained, “Every year, I send an email to the schools and parishes so they can come here for the Life Chain and give a voice to the voiceless, to promote life, and for people to know that a baby in the womb is alive. It's not ‘going to be alive’ when it's born – it's already alive at conception.”

The demonstration is part of Respect Life Month, observed by the Catholic Church in the United States each October. The observance encourages Catholics to reflect on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death and to support mothers, children and families facing difficult circumstances.

Life Chain began in California in 1987 through a local pro-life ministry called Please Let Me Live. Since the 1990s, the annual demonstration has expanded across the United States and Canada, inviting Christians to gather in public prayer and witness in defense of unborn children.

Beyond the demonstration

For the Archdiocese of Miami, that public witness is accompanied by year-round efforts to assist women and families facing unexpected or difficult pregnancies.

Ocasio added, “We need people to support us because we also are on the streets during the weekends at the abortion facilities, handing out information to the women that are going for abortions, that they have other options, that we have pregnancy help centers here in Miami and Broward that can help them with their babies. And there's a lot of financial help programs that we direct them to.”

The archdiocesan Respect Life Ministry operates pregnancy help centers in Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Miami, offering free services to Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Services include pregnancy and postpartum counseling, pregnancy testing, limited ultrasound exams, referrals, material assistance, Project Joseph groups for fathers, and Project Rachel post-abortion healing.

A mobile pregnancy center also visits locations throughout Broward County, while another is expected to begin operating in Miami-Dade County.

Abortion in the United States

The annual Life Chain takes place against the backdrop of more than five decades of national debate over abortion. The U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision established a constitutional right to abortion nationwide. In 2022, the court overturned that precedent in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, returning much of the authority to regulate abortion to individual states.

An estimated 1.13 million clinician-provided abortions took place in the United States in 2025, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a 21% increase from 2020 and the highest annual total since 2009. The figure remains below the historical peak of more than 1.6 million abortions in 1990. The 2025 abortion rate was 16.7 abortions per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44.

Giving a voice to the voiceless

Along US 1, participants said their presence was intended to raise awareness about abortion and express solidarity with mothers and unborn children.

“It's important that we publicly show our support for life and are the voices for those who have no voice,” said Father Zachary Akers, FSSP, chaplain of The Holy Face of Jesus Latin Mass Chaplaincy.

Passing drivers honked their horns and gave thumbs-up gestures in support of the demonstrators.

“In this society, we are dehumanizing lives, and that needs to change,” said Johan Garcilazo, a member of Students for Life at Florida International University. “We are here to advocate for that and change people's perspective on abortion,” helping Americans to realize that “abortion is murder and that it shouldn't be happening in this nation.”

For Roxalyn Perez-Power, a mother of three and member of the ARCH Angels of South Florida Catholic homeschool community, the cause carries personal significance. Having experienced two miscarriages, she spoke about her belief that every child's life is precious.

“No life is too little, and we should be advocating for every single stage of life,” Perez-Power said.

“From the very beginning, God loves you and gives meaning to your life,” she added. “We're here reminding people about that and telling people that if you're in a difficult situation, there are always options. God loves you. And even if you do something wrong, God is here to forgive you and to change your life.”

Freddy Mena-Gutierrez, 37, also sees the Life Chain as an extension of his ongoing pro-life advocacy. A volunteer with Sidewalk Advocates for Life, he helps connect women outside abortion clinics with free pregnancy resources.

“We're here to promote the culture of life, celebrating the gift of life from God from conception to natural death, standing up for those who are defenseless, and being courageous with love,” he said.

A separate Life Chain demonstration took place simultaneously along University Drive in Broward County.

For Mena-Gutierrez, the call to defend life extends well beyond a single afternoon of public witness.

He urged readers to “be witnesses to life in every stage, every form, and every scenario.”
