High school students invited to ‘Rise Up’

Principals, chaplains, and campus ministers are invited to bring as many as 50 students from each archdiocesan high school to a youth celebration Thursday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the campus of St. Thomas University, 16401 N.W. 37 Ave., Miami Gardens. Called “Rise Up for a Revival,” the event is designed to inspire Catholic high school students to embrace their roles as missionary disciples of the Eucharist, in preparation for the 2024 National Eucharistic Congress. It is also timed to coincide with the Archdiocese of Miami’s 65th anniversary celebration. Students are encouraged to craft banners displaying their joy for the anniversary while dressed in their respective uniforms. The keynote speaker for Rise Up will be Joe Melendrez, a renowned international Catholic speaker and recording artist who had an important role at World Youth Day Lisbon 2023. Archbishop Thomas Wenski will celebrate the closing Mass. New blog on archdiocesan website

The Archdiocese of Miami’s Communications Office has launched a new blog that will appear the first Wednesday of each month on the archdiocesan website, miamiarch.org. Called Through the Catholic Lens, the blog will focus on looking at art, media and entertainment through a Catholic worldview. The idea came from Florida Catholic freelancer Emily Chaffins, a parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes in Miami who is studying for her master’s in fine arts, with a concentration on creative writing, at Florida International University. Chaffins envisions the blog reaching all audiences, but especially young adults like herself, who “could be further evangelized through content of interest,” she said. Chaffins will author some of the blogs and curate the submissions from other bloggers. Her first blog, connecting the Disney film “Moana” with John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, was posted Sept. 6, 2023, and can be found by using the keyword “Moana.”
