MIAMI � St. Brendan High School alumnus Adalberto Jordan has become the first Cuban-born judge to be named to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Confirmed by the Senate in a 95 to 4 vote Feb. 15, Jordan will serve on a court that handles federal cases originating in Alabama, Georgia and Florida.Jordan is a 1980 graduate of St. Brendan High School, as is his wife, Esther, who graduated the same year and has taught at St. Brendan since 1984. Esther Jordan teaches American government, AP government and Spanish, and chairs the high school�s Foreign Language Department.
The Jordans� daughters also are St. Brendan High graduates. Diana graduated in 2008 and Elizabeth in 2011. Adalberto Jordan still coaches the girls� soccer team at St. Brendan, something he began doing when his daughters were in school.
His wife, Esther, said his new position will not require him to move out of state. �He�ll be commuting once a month� to hear cases in Atlanta or Alabama, she said.
Jordan also is adjunct professor of law at his alma mater, the University of Miami, and at Florida International University. Prior to being appointed to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, he served as a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, as assistant U.S. attorney for the same district, as a partner in the Miami offices of Steel, Hector and Davis, and as a clerk for Justice Sandra Day O�Connor in the U.S. Supreme Court.
Jordan was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1961 and came to Miami with his family in 1968.
