Christopher Columbus High School seeks a dedicated and student-centered High School Counselor to support students in their academic success, social-emotional development, and postsecondary planning, while helping to uphold and advance the school’s Catholic Marist mission of forming young men in faith, service, and leadership. This role involves implementing a comprehensive counseling program that fosters student growth and well-being. The ideal candidate brings experience in guiding students through their high school journey, providing individualized support, and collaborating with faculty, families, and administrators to enhance the overall student experience.
The High School Counselor empowers students to achieve academic excellence, personal growth, and post-secondary success by providing a comprehensive and student-centered counseling program that fosters resilience, self-awareness, and lifelong learning. The candidate performs all duties and responsibilities win alignment of the mission, vision, and tenets of the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami.
This role requires dedication, flexibility, and a passion for empowering students to achieve their full potential. Contract hours run from 7:30 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. The school counselor may perform other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities include:
Academic Support:
- Develop and manage a comprehensive counseling program in partnership with school leadership.
- Provide individual academic advising, course selection, and graduation planning.
- Monitor student progress, maintain records, and analyze performance data to guide academic planning.
- Deliver counseling curriculum through group and classroom sessions.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to support student success.
- Provide relevant data and insights to stakeholders.
- Assist in interpreting student data and implementing effective interventions.
- Maintain detailed records of student and parent meetings.
Social - Emotional Support:
- Build strong relationships and provide individual/group counseling.
- Support students' personal and social development, goal setting, and coping strategies.
- Offer crisis intervention and promote mental health awareness.
- Foster a positive school culture and student well-being.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives to enhance student success.
- Advocate for student agency, voice, and accountability.
College and Career Advising:
- Assist students in self-discovery, goal setting, and career exploration.
- Guide students through standardized test preparation and college research.
- Facilitate partnerships with colleges, universities, and vocational programs.
- Conduct student and parent workshops on college readiness.
- Plan and lead parent counseling events and workshops.
- Serve as a liaison between the school and families to foster student growth.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to support student success.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in counseling.
- Minimum of 2 years of school counseling experience.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Skilled at gathering and analyzing data and preparing and delivering presentations.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with colleagues, students, and parents.
- Proficiency in counseling and educational planning software.
- Ready to participate in and/or lead school counseling programs in the evening.
- Willingness to stay current with professional development and best practices.
- Able to adhere to ethical and professional standards in school counseling.
- Supportive and respectful of the mission and tenets of the Roman Catholic Church.
