School Counselor (Full-Time)

Belen Jesuit is currently accepting applications for the position of full-time School Counselor. This position will report to the Director of School Counseling and/or the Principal and President and will be evaluated annually by the Director of the Department. The evaluation will be based upon the School Counselor’s self –evaluation, the characteristics of Jesuit Education, and the responsibilities. The school seeks to hire and retain employees who are skilled in their field, involved participants in the community, active in their faith, and dedicated to carrying out the mission of the school as stated above. Applicants should have an ability to relate to and work well with others, possess excellent writing, communication, organizational and leadership skills, and be proficient in the use of computers and technology. A working knowledge of the Society of Jesus and Jesuit education is desirable. Salary is commensurate with degrees and experience.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide individual counseling with students for the purpose of enacting positive changes in the areas of educational, personal, social, emotional, and/or behavioral functioning.
- Maintain records on individual students by documenting counseling sessions, and other relevant interactions with teachers and/or parents.
- Provide ongoing consultation with teachers, staff, administration and parents to best meet the student’s developmental needs.
- Hold parent conferences and respond to parental requests in an appropriate and timely manner.
- When needed, refer students to other staff such as spiritual counselors, Dean of Students and teachers, and/or outside specialists and programs. Follow up with staff and outside professionals to provide continuity of care.
- Participate in, coordinate, or conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school and in support of the school’s core purpose and values.
- Conduct group counseling sessions for groups of students with common needs.
- Provide group and individual interpretation of test results to students, teachers and parents.
- Develop a guidance curriculum consisting of structured lessons designed to help students achieve specific competencies and to provide all students with the knowledge and skills appropriate for their developmental level. Said curriculum will be implemented in a systematic and consistent manner in the classroom setting.
- Plan and evaluate the guidance program annually.
- Pursue continuous professional growth in school counseling.
- Identify student’s strengths and effectively use them to maximize student success.
- Treat each student with individual care (cura personalis) in overcoming obstacles that may form barriers to learning or personal growth.
- Organize and participate in any special activities, projects, or presentations that will assist in meeting the guidance curriculum goals.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree or higher in Counseling or related field.
- Education background preferred.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (preferred).
- 5 years’ experience working at the middle or high school level.
- Promote teamwork, communication, consistency, quality, and pride in the educational development of the whole student.
- Fully understand the philosophy and apostolic purpose of Jesuit education and is committed to its spreading through personal example and endeavors.
