U.S. bishops vote to write document on meaning of Eucharist in life of the Church

Statement of Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued this statement June 21, 2021:

“Last week, my brother bishops and I voted overwhelmingly to issue a teaching document on the beauty and power of the Eucharist. The doctrine committee of the bishops’ conference will now begin drafting this document and, in the months ahead, the bishops will continue our prayer and discernment through a series of regional meetings and consultations. In November, the bishops will gather to discuss the document draft.

“The Eucharist is the heart of the Church and the heart of our lives as Catholics. In the Holy Eucharist, Jesus Christ himself draws near to each one of us personally and gathers us together as one family of God and one Body of Christ.

“As bishops, our desire is to deepen our people’s awareness of this great mystery of faith, and to awaken their amazement at this divine gift, in which we have communion with the living God. That is our pastoral purpose in writing this document.

“I invite everyone in the Church to pray for the bishops as we continue our dialogues and reflections. I pray that this will be a time for all of us in the Church to reflect on our own faith and readiness to receive our Lord in the Holy Eucharist.”

It, makes me sad, disgusted and disappointed of our Catholic Representative uses their power for Political purposes ideology wants to punish our leaders representative for all US Citizens to do not receive the body of Christ. Please do not use and misrepresent the Catholic community. These a very personal matter and Jesus said "if you are free of sins throughout the first stone". The Pope said" to do not do it to stop it and you still presenting it. That is very out of control and please stop that do you will loose millions of Catholics. This my opinion and I am speaking with other Catholics from my church and they are totally disapointed too. Thank you.

Let’s take a look at what St Paul says on the subject and what the Church has perennially taught.: 27Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. 28But let a man prove himself: and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of the chalice. 29For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 11:29

I’m very sad by the treatment of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. We’re all sinners, but for some people to flaunt their sins and mock the communion by publicizing how they can still receive it, makes me sad, disgusted and disappointed. My mother abstained from receiving it while my previously married father was alive. And she’s just one example of faithfuls who painfully abstain because they love the Lord so much. Ashamed of my leaders in the church that do not speak up.
