Archbishop Thomas Wenski preached this homily during a Mass he celebrated Jan. 1, 2021 at Mother of Christ in Miami. During the Mass, he also consecrated a new altar and blessed the church’s refurbished worship space. Jan. 1 is the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.
Feliz Ano Nuevo! The world today celebrates a New Year – and so, I wish each one of you a Happy New Year. 2020 was not an easy year – a pandemic, an economic downturn, social unrest, all conspired to test our patience and our faith. So, we hope for a more normal year – but we do have a long road ahead of us.
And so, yes “Happy New Year”; but even as we consider new beginnings, new resolutions and renewed hopes, we also celebrate the feast of Mary, the Mother of God. This feast is uniquely appropriate for each New Year’s Day that is always full of promise and hope; for we invoke her help that we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.
Also, since this parish bears the name of the Mother of Christ, today is a fitting day to rededicate this temple in her honor and for the glory of God as we blessed the new pews and consecrate a new altar. I congratulate your pastor, Father Jorge (Carvajal-Niño) – and all of you – for this beautiful renovation of the worship space of this parish community. This is a good way to start a New Year!

Esta renovación, gracias a sus sacrificios, nos ha dado un hermoso y más digno lugar para que esta comunidad celebre el misterio de la Eucaristía. La celebración Eucarística es nuestra comunión con el Cuerpo y la Sangre de nuestro Señor. Esta comunión anticipa el banquete que nos espera en el cielo. Es una prenda de la futura gloria. Cuando Cristo fue sacrificado en el Calvario, el pecado fue vencido. En este altar, el mismo sacrificio se hace presente a nosotros cada día, para que su victoria sobre el pecado, la muerte y Satanás, también sea nuestra.
Recemos en esta noche, el primero del Nuevo Año, para que este templo con todas sus características nos ayude a comunicar el gran Misterio de nuestra Salvación que se celebrará aquí todos los días. Este misterio de fe nutrirá la esperanza que hace posible vivir la fe en amor.
Como católicos creemos que Dios creó todas las cosas – visibles e invisibles. Y, por lo tanto, toda creación, todo lo material que Dios nos ha dado, puede servir como medio para encontrarnos con El. El Hijo de Dios se hizo carne para que pudiese llevarnos con más facilidad al Padre. Debido a la encarnación, las cosas materiales pueden utilizarse para comunicar gracia. Creemos que los sacramentos comunican la gracia de Dios. Lo que la gracia logra se hace más comprensible por medio de los signos visibles de los sacramentos: agua, aceite, pan y vino, todos nos ayudan a comunicar los misterios que simbolizan y que los hacen presentes. De este modo, todos los accesorios en esta iglesia – el ambo, el altar, las velas, la fuente bautismal, las estaciones – hasta los mismos bancos – todo ayuda a comunicarnos los misterios que celebramos.
In Mary, we see the pledge of the destiny that God has promised all his children. She, full of grace, is the measure of who we are and who we are to be. Mary is the first disciple – the model believer – for as we hear in the Gospel reading, she hears the good news and ponders it in her heart – and she fully responds to it.
Her “yes” to God at the Annunciation opened the doors of our world to hope. The Eternal Word became flesh in her womb. She is the Mother of God because the child born to her was truly God and truly man. Of course, she had to reaffirm that “yes” throughout her life, even to the foot of the cross. Because she “heard” the good news and pondered it in her heart, the Mother of Christ becomes the place when we discover Jesus and who he truly is. A renovated worship space should remind us that it is not enough just to renovate the physical appearances of our parish. A renovated worship space was needed, but also needed are renovated worshippers, with renovated hearts and minds, who like Mary also reaffirm their “yes” to God and his will as they make their Way through this life to the heavenly kingdom.
Like Mary, we too must hear the Word of God and ponder it in our hearts, for this is how we too will learn how to respond to God’s will, as we continue our own journey towards God. As she looked upon the visible Word made flesh, and pondered that Word, we the Church look upon the invisible Word made flesh hidden under the appearances of Bread and Wine in the Blessed Sacrament and ponder that same Word in Scripture.
Maria, Madre de Dios nos modela cómo nosotros, como Iglesia, debemos responder a Cristo, buscando crecer en nuestro conocimiento de él cada día. Desde el momento de la Anunciación, cuando dijo por primera vez "sí" a Dios y el Verbo se hizo carne en su vientre, ella tenía que reafirmar ese “sí” a lo largo de su vida, hasta al pie de la cruz.
Se comienza un nuevo año en nuestro peregrinar hacia el Reino. Que esta obra realizada con muchos sacrificios represente no solo la renovación de un templo físico sino también la renovación de los fieles de esta parroquia, Madre de Cristo.
Hay un cuento de un hijo quien llamó a su madre para desearle un Feliz Año Nuevo, y la madre le preguntó, “Entonces, mijito, ¿cuál es tu resolución del Ano Nuevo?” Como el hijo fue muy listo, respondió, “Mami, mi resolución es hacerte lo más feliz que puedo todo el año.” Y entonces, dijo a su madre: “¿Y tú? ¿Cuál es tu resolución?” Y la madre contestó: “Mijito, ver que tu mantengas tu resolución del Ano Nuevo.”
Que nuestra resolución sea hacer que nuestra Madre celestial sea feliz porque como ella digamos “si” a la voluntad de Dios durante todo el año. Que la Madre de Cristo nos ayude a mantener esta resolución durante todo el año 2021. Como dice el canto, “Madre de todos los hombres, enséñanos a decir Amen”.
