Miami ... (June 7, 2023) As Archbishop Thomas Wenski says his daily prayers, perhaps mentioning the Florida Panthers and what an NHL Stanley Cup victory could be for South Florida hockey fans and the community, others may follow his lead.

To bring even more hope and fun into this only once-before triumph for the Florida Panthers, Archbishop Wenski has wagered stone crabs and hand-rolled cigars from the Little Havana section of Miami to the newly elevated Archbishop of Las Vegas, George Leo Thomas ... home of the Golden Knights.

“In this beautiful, breezy and cool sand of South Florida, surrounded by the beautiful Caribbean-blue waters, we are offering the Archdiocese of Las Vegas native stone crabs and hand-rolled cigars from the Little Havana section of Miami which I know they would have enjoyed if we were to lose ... but I pray the Florida Panthers will not,” Archbishop Wenski said.

Archbishop Thomas accepted Archbishop Wenski’s wager, and in true Las Vegas fashion is doubling down. “We are wagering not one, but two mafioso sets of steaks from the legendary Las Vegas steakhouse, The Golden Steer,” said Archbishop Thomas. “It’s always perilous to gamble with Vegas!”

Las Vegas has much to celebrate as Bishop Thomas was elevated to archbishop by Pope Francis on May 30.

Both archbishops will be attending the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) general assembly in two weeks in Orlando.
