FORT LAUDERDALE | Dr. Martin Roche has performed the world’s first robotic total knee replacement using the MAKO RIO Robotic Arm System at Holy Cross Hospital.
“Our surgeons at the Holy Cross Orthopedic Institute are focused on developing and providing the most advanced technologies for our patients,” said Dr. Roche. “We performed the first MAKOplasty partial knee replacement almost 10 years ago, and I am excited we can now offer a full range of robotic surgeries for both knee and hip arthritis. The accuracy and precision of the robotic arm (RIO) with integrated sensors (Verasense) helps guide the surgeon to achieve the surgical plan consistently and safely.”
Coral Springs, Fla. resident Sandra Goldberg, 70, was the first to have the procedure.
“Wherever I have gone, no one can believe how I have bounced back so quickly,” said Goldberg just nine weeks after the surgery. “I am going back to work and I thought it was going to take four to five months.”
Total knee replacements offer pain relief and improved function to millions of patients with arthritic knees. Goldberg, a home health nurse who conducts health assessments, plans to have her other knee replaced next year, ideally using the same technology.
Holy Cross Hospital consistently ranks among the nation’s top hospitals for orthopedic services and joint replacement due to its low complication rates and better than expected outcomes. Most recently, U.S. News & World Report named Holy Cross Hospital a nationally high-performing hospital in both hip and knee replacement surgery.
“We have invested in clinical pathways and research that improve our surgical outcomes, and offer our patients the most advanced proven technologies to enable them to return to the activities they love,” said Director of Orthopedic Services Marc Trajan.
Holy Cross Hospital is one of 25 among the nation’s roughly 3,400 hospitals, and the only one in South Florida, to be recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as performing better than the U.S. national rate for avoiding both 30-day risk standardized readmission and complications following total hip and total knee replacement surgery.
