Director of Music

St. Andrew Catholic Parish, in Coral Springs, is looking for a Director of Music. Sacred music is an essential component of Catholic worship and is especially important at the celebration of the Mass. Working in close collaboration with the pastor, who is the director of liturgy in the parish, the Director of Music plans, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates the music at Mass and all other liturgical events. The candidate performs all duties in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami.
Functions and responsibilities include:
- Prepare, oversee, rehearse, and implement music for all Masses of the parish, either directly or through choir directors. These include those that correspond with Saturday vigil liturgies as well as Sunday liturgies, and may be in Spanish as well as English.
- Plan and implement music at all Funeral Masses and Weddings (with or without Mass).
- Coordinate and oversee music for special liturgical events, including but not limited to:
- Masses with the conferral of the sacraments (e.g. Confirmation, First Holy Communion, Easter Vigil, etc.).
- Christmas, Holy Week, and Sacred Paschal Triduum liturgies.
- Sunday celebrations of national patron/patroness.
- Feast of Saint Andrew
- Annual Eucharistic Procession
- Lessons and Carols
- Coordinate the work of and communicate regularly with all parish choirs (cf. supra), choir directors, vocalists, and instrumentalists.
- Make use of the following principles for the choice of music:
- Since liturgical singing gives glory to Almighty God and is an instrument of evangelization and catechesis, the lyrics of the hymns are to be in conformity with and promote Catholic theology.
- Singing is to facilitate the faithful’s active participation in the sacred action and promote unity. Therefore, hymns should be familiar and new hymns taught. This is especially true of the people’s responses in the Mass (e.g. Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, etc.).
- The music selected and its implementation is to be consistent with the liturgical season and/or specific event (e.g. Lent, Easter, Funeral, Wedding, Eucharistic adoration, etc.).
- The style of music shall include traditional and new melodies and meters. These include chants (e.g. Gregorian, Taizé, Meinrad, etc.), traditional hymn tunes (e.g. Long Meter, Hydrydol, Gregorian, etc.), traditional cultural hymns (from the ethnic communities of the parish), as well as contemporary hymns.
- Latin is to be included as part of the living heritage of the Catholic Church.
- Various instruments shall be used, especially the organ, piano, flute, violin, brass, and guitar.
- Identify, promote, and train volunteers as cantors, choir directors, instrumentalists, etc.
- Develop, administer, and monitor the annual music ministry budget. Submit annual budget recommendations and obtain required approvals for expenditures in accordance with parish financial policies.
- Maintain and keep current a music library.
- Ensure that parish instruments are well maintained.
- Coordinate music-related technology including sound systems, livestream audio support, digital music libraries, worship presentation software, and copyright licensing compliance.
- Meet periodically with the Pastor, organize monthly liturgy planning meeting, and attend bi-weekly staff meetings.
- Coordinate the scheduling and compensation of paid musicians in accordance with parish policies and approved budgets.
- Participate in and help organize the annual Interfaith Pre-Thanksgiving Prayer Service.
- Provide, as needed, lyrics for the parish bulletin.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Pastor.
Qualifications:
- Thorough understanding of applied music, music theory and the history of music, most often achieved through an undergraduate degree preferably in sacred music, organ, or vocal performance.
- Performance proficiency in a keyboard instrument used in liturgical celebration and voice/ choral performance experience.
- Knowledge of keyboard technique, liturgical service-playing techniques, group vocal techniques and choral conducting.
- Some understanding of acoustics, especially pertaining to the parish worship space.
- Basic knowledge of theory and harmony.
- Awareness of vast repertoire of music available today, both contemporary and treasured, sacred pieces.
- Readiness to pursue continuing education and professional development, utilizing both local (e.g. Archdiocesan) and other training opportunities.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, parish management systems, digital music software, livestream technologies, worship presentation platforms, and electronic communications.
- Demonstrated knowledge of liturgical planning, worship design, and current copyright and licensing requirements related to sacred music.
- Must be full communion with the Roman Catholic Church and a practicing Catholic.
- Bachelor's degree in Sacred Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Choral Conducting, Organ Performance, or related field preferred.
- Minimum three (3) years of parish music ministry leadership experience preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit, mentor, and retain volunteer musicians.
- Have an appreciation for and be well trained and experienced in Catholic sacred music.
- An ability to interact and maintain a positive working relationship with parishioners, parish staff and other musicians.
- Always maintain a professional demeanor and behavior and attire.
- Proficient as an organist, pianist, and choir director.
- Experience with bilingual or multicultural liturgical communities preferred. Sensitivity to and respect for the ethnic composition of the parish and its musical needs.
- Excellent oral and written English communication skills required. Conversational or professional proficiency in Spanish strongly preferred.
- Meets and maintains all Archdiocesan Safe Environment requirements.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound pastoral judgment.
