PARKLAND | Baking soda and engineering made two Mary Help of Christians students winners at this year's Broward regional science fair.

Sixth grader Rafael Opperman was selected as a winner of the special Air Force Award for his engineering project. Fellow sixth grader Victoria Servideo's project, investigating the effect of baking soda and baking powder on cupcakes, was selected as a fourth place winner.

The two, along with eight others from the Parkland school, competed with hundreds of other Broward middle school students. The school selected their grade level projects for the competition based on scientific knowledge, creativity, design and methodology, and execution.

One of the entries was from an eighth grader, six were from seventh graders and three were from sixth graders. The other participants were: Lauren Nelson, Christopher Enlow, Chloe Fandino, William Hanrahan, Connor Norusis, Stone Ferguson, Patrick Corley, and Kelly Hoover.
