McCarthy High students honored for excellence in sports, academics

SOUTHWEST RANCHES | Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School is celebrating its students' excellence in sports and academics.

Four of the high school's athletes recently signed a Letter of Intent making their university commitment official.

"By signing a Letter of Intent the student athlete has made a commitment to attend a specific college or university and accept an athletic scholarship for their chosen sport," said Anthony Massaro, McCarthy High's director of athletics.

The students accepting scholarships were:
  • Kaitlyn Ortagus, softball, signed with Brevard Community College (Eastern Florida State College as of this fall) in Cocoa
  • Jonathan Quintana, baseball, signed with Barry University, Miami Shores 
  • Jacob Blanco, soccer, signed with Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton
  • Nick Elias, lacrosse, signed with Wingate University, North Carolina.
On the academic side, 20 students were nominated for the prestigious National Merit Award, and three of those were named National Merit Finalists.

"We are so happy to have these students represent our school in such an honorable manner. These are the inquisitive minds of tomorrow and undoubtedly deserve to be a part of this prestigious program," said Pilar Blanco, director of guidance.

National Merit Award finalists were:
  • Dakota Connell-Ledwon, a member of the color guard/winter guard, Maverick Singers, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and the Science National Honor Society. She has applied to UF, Amherst College, New College, Brown, Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton, Notre Dame, Stanford and Duke. She will major in biology and English.
  • Allegra Narvaez, a member of Peer Ministry, color guard and the step team. She attended a National Student Leadership Conference in Chicago last summer and also received a prestigious Presidents Education Award. She has applied to NYU, FSU, Pratt Institute, The New School, Cornell and Pace University. She will major in Fashion Design.
  • Christopher Strohmeier, a member of Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and the chess team. He has applied to Harvard, MIT, Princeton, NYU, University of Chicago, UF, Stanford, Cornell and Brown. He will major in Applied Math.
