PLANTATION Three students from St Gregory the Great School have been recognized for their superlative achievement in the field of mathematics.
Placing among the top 10 in the national Immaculate Heart of Mary mathematics contest were eighth-graders Karina Fernandez, who placed sixth in the nation, and Christina Wells, who placed ninth; and seventh-grader Juan Rincon, who placed second.
The contest, known as the IHM Mathematics Contest for short, is regarded as being the most difficult annual mathematics contest in the nation for seventh and eighth grade students. The hosts of the competition, the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, located in Pennsylvania, staff numerous Catholic schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, Peru and Chile.
The competition began with a staggering 2,600 seventh and eighth grade students from 104 schools. In February, preliminary tests were held which served to narrow the field to only 253 students from both grades. Ultimately, only 10 students from each grade were given certificates and awards recognizing their achievements.
St. Gregory the Great School opened on Sept. 6, 1960 and is a recognized National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
