Lead Maintenance Worker

Nativity Catholic School is hiring a Lead Maintenance Worker that will perform a variety of tasks involving maintenance and repair of school buildings and premises. They will be responsible for contributing to the school’s educational goals by creating, maintaining, and developing a safe, attractive, and functional environment. This position also requires working closely and with the support of the Facility Manager. The Lead Maintenance Worker performs all duties and responsibilities in alignment with the mission, vision and values of the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami.
Essential Functions include:
- Assist with the maintenance of all school buildings. Perform routine inspection of the grounds, installations, and equipment to determine necessity of repairs, maintenance or replacement with the guidance of the Facility Manager.
- On arrival, survey the building for anything which seems out of order.
- Check all bathrooms and cafeteria to see if they were properly cleaned the night before. Correct any maintenance issues and report to the Facility Manager.
- Regularly Inspect all lighting fixtures that should be cleaned of dust accumulation and replace any burnt out lights.
- Once a week hose down the playground. Keep the playground area free of weeds. Inspect the playground for cracks, bending, rusting, or breakage of any component. Check for loose nuts, caps, or exposed bolts with sharp edges.
- Ensure that all hoses are rolled up, unless they are in use.
- Assemble and install new furniture or school equipment for classrooms.
- Monitor and solve issues from school related Helpdesk items that are assigned by Facility Manager.
- Regularly change air-filters in the school building. Perform any repairs or maintenance to the air conditioners that may be needed.
- Routinely change all water fountain filters at school.
- Observe appearance and condition of premises and applicable equipment; report needed repairs, safety hazards, or anything out of the ordinary to the maintenance supervisor. Help in performing building and grounds improvements that ensure that all facility appearances positively reflect and enhance the parish and school in the community.
- Perform all work according to safe work practices while maintaining a safe, clean work area and tools, and report any hazards to supervisor. Lock out and tag tools, equipment, or areas of vulnerability (i.e., electrical outlets) as needed to maintain safety.
- Use personal protective equipment properly when required by OSHA or on their own initiative, when hazardous conditions are evident.
- During time changes must change timers on all exterior lights.
- Assist in pressure cleaning the outside of the windows and walkways in the school and parish hall.
- At the end of the day make sure all gates are locked.
- Whenever there are school activities in Parish Hall coordinate with Facility Manager and Principal to ensure the proper support is given for set-up and break-down.
- Carrie out responsibilities and duties with minimal interruption to normal workflow patterns of school business; observe guidelines regarding proper protocols with students and faculty as indicated in parent/student handbook.
- Respond to emergency situations and perform necessary repairs.
- Other duties as assigned by Facility Manager/Pastor/Principal/Business Manager.
Qualifications:
- High-school diploma or G.E.D.
- Five years’ experience in two or more of the skilled trades: Carpentry; roofing; tilework; construction; plumbing; HVAC; mechanical repairs.
- Knowledge of basic safety and security measures and practices.
- Understanding of and demonstrated essential electrical and plumbing skill; HVAC knowledge is preferred.
- Experience working with or around children required.
- Some security experience a plus.
- Good oral English and Spanish language communication skills.
- Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of one’s arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
- Direct physical activity may be required to operate machines or processes.
- Must be able to stand for significant periods of time.
- Must be able to lift (up to 50 pounds) and move heavy objects (over 75 pounds).
- Must be flexible regarding availability for school/parish special events on the weekends when necessary.
- Perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
- Use hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.
- Works outdoors when required, in a hot and humid environment.
- May require use of personal protective clothing, according to task.
