Maintenance Person/ Handyman

St. Joseph Catholic Parish, located in Miami Beach, is hiring for a reliable and skilled Maintenance Person/ Handyman to contribute to the care of the parish community and facilities. This person will work under the direction of the Office Manager and is responsible for tasks that clean, improve, maintain, and repair the grounds, facilities, and related equipment of all properties of St. Joseph Catholic Parish. These properties consist of the church/sacristy/chapel, parish office/rectory, and school building. The Maintenance Person/ Handyman performs all duties and responsibilities in alignment with the mission, vision and values of the Archdiocese of Miami.
Hours: part-time or full- time available.
Responsibilities include:
- Complete work orders assigned by the Office Manager on Parish, Rectory, and School facilities.
- Perform general repairs and upkeep of the parish buildings and grounds.
- Complete basic electrical troubleshooting and repairs.
- Carry out handyman tasks (fixing and assembling items, preventive maintenance).
- Plumbing repairs and maintenance.
- Ensure the parish facilities remain safe, clean, and well maintained.
- Repair or replace defective parts, equipment, and structures; and reassemble equipment, using hand or power tools. Approach repair work critically to ensure that the repair is the best solution and make recommendations to the Office Manager on better alternative solutions or approaches, if applicable.
- Replace small components and parts in electrical devices (lamps, light bulbs, sockets, etc.) in Church, School, Rectory.
- Clean air-conditioning systems and change filters monthly or according to determined schedule. Check for any leaks or clogs.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and to prevent deterioration of buildings/structures.
- Clean the assigned buildings and bathrooms therein, including sweeping, mopping, and dusting furniture on a regular basis; gather and dispose of trash and waste materials by hand.
- Dust the assigned buildings items such as blinds, furniture, file cabinets, and windowsills using treated cloths or hand cleaning items.
- Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, mirrors, and fixtures using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges or squeegees (using a step ladder when applicable).
- Empty wastebaskets and transport to outside receptacles/dumpster.
- Perform lawn and garden maintenance including removing debris, weeding and mulching flower- and plant beds, and blowing dried leaves as needed.
- Remove litter, observing proper disposal practices.
- Water lawns, trees, or plants using portable sprinkler systems, hoses or watering cans.
- Pressure clean the sidewalks around the church, rectory, and school twice a month.
- Observe appearance and condition of premises and applicable equipment; report needed repairs, safety hazards, or anything out of the ordinary to the Office Manager.
- Perform carpentry and construction-related tasks such as small installations not requiring permits.
- Perform routine inspections of equipment, fluid levels, etc., following checklists.
- Prepare and break down meeting and event rooms and areas by arranging furniture and heavy equipment according to specifications in work order.
- Perform all work according to safe work practices while maintaining a safe, clean work area and tools, and report any hazards to the Office Manager. Lock out and tag tools, equipment, or areas of vulnerability (i.e., electrical outlets) as needed to maintain safety.
- Detect and report to the Office Manager defective materials and structural components.
- Complete required training in safety measures, emergency evacuation procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and other material highlighted by OSHA as important for occupational safety and health.
- Other facilities-related projects and duties as needed or assigned.
Qualifications:
- High-school diploma or G.E.D. with three years’ maintenance or handyman experience and/or training preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Technical or trade school coursework in building technology and/or HVAC a plus.
- Hands-on skills in plumbing, electrical, and general repairs
- Ability to troubleshoot and fix issues in a timely manner
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings or other structures.
- Valid FL driver license and automobile insurance.
- Knowledge of relevant safety equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
- Mathematics: Knowledge of arithmetic and applications required for the tasks.
- Basic PC skills, including ability to navigate the Windows OS, enter data into system and perform e-mail functions in MS Outlook, required.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, Hazard Communication labels and safety warnings.
- Good oral and written English-language communication skills.
- Good Spanish-language and/or Haitian-Creole or French-language spoken communication skills strongly preferred.
- Requires use of personal protective clothing and equipment, according to task.
- Ability to work outdoors when required, in a hot and humid environment or in high places.
- Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
- Dependable, organized, and proactive in maintaining facilities.
