The Nicene Creed was drawn up by church leaders in the fourth century to define basic beliefs and defend against heresies then sweeping the Christian world. Here is how they are depicted in 24 of the 36 stained glass windows at St. Bonaventure Church in Davie. . The other windows depict events from the life of Christ, including the wedding at Cana, the transfiguration and the triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
The Creation: "I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible."
The Annunciation: "For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary...."
The Nativity: "...and became man."
The crucifixion: "...For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate..."
Death of Christ: "...He suffered death and was buried..."
The resurrection: "...and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures..."
The Ascension: "...He ascended into heaven..."
The Ascension: "...and is seated at the right hand of the Father..."
The Last Judgment: "...He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead..."
The descent of the Holy Spirit: "...I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son..."
Cross and chalice: "...I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic church..."
The forgiveness of sins: "...I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins..."
Resurrection of the body: "...And I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come."
A restored heaven and earth: "And I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come."
"Amen": The last word of the Nicene Creed is Hebrew for "So be it" -- an affirmation of faith and strong agreement.
