After the Archdiocese of Miami published Sister Jennifer Tecla Hyatt’s “Cinema divina: Praying the Word of God with movies” in Through the Catholic Lens blog Nov. 6, 2024, the Daughters of St. Paul received requests from young adults to host “cinema divina” movie nights. In her blog article, Sister Jennifer described cinema divina as “based on the ancient prayer practice of lectio divina” – which involves reading and reflecting on Bible passages – except participants prayerfully meditate on movies.
Cinema divina “takes us on a journey in which we reflect on film stories and then listen to how the Holy Spirit invites us to live, based on what we experience by connecting Scripture and film,” explained Sister Jennifer. “Movie stories reflect our common human experience and the gift of relationships. When we bring our faith into conversation with movie stories, we can be inspired to be more authentically human.”
