The newly ordained priests of the Archdiocese of Miami, Father Javier Barreto and Father Bryan Garcia presided the conclusion of the Mass in honor of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
MIAMI| The feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and
the Immaculate Heart of Mary was celebrated June 12 at St. John Vianney College Seminary, which hosted an all-night
vigil. The feast began with Mass at 8
p.m. honoring the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and concluded with Mass at 6 a.m.
honoring the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
"We
call this vigil a feast of love," said Mother Adela Galindo, founder of
the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary, who attended the
event. "We began the vigil years
ago, in order to unite the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with the
Immaculate Heart of Mary. We want both hearts to be venerated and united in our
prayers."
One
innovation in this year's vigil: Every hour was dedicated to a specific
vocation, such as youth, The Divine Mercy, prayer for the sick, and priests.
Mass was celebrated by Bishop Fernando Isern, and families and individuals were
consecrated to the Sacred Hearts following Mass, in which a prayer written by
Mother Adela Galindo was read aloud.
"My
hope is that all of us can contemplate the heart of our Blessed Lord and of his
mother, so that we may become witnesses of love in a world that is in need of
love," Mother Adela said.
The
vigil was streamed live, in order for all countries to "connect in
prayer," as Mother Adela put it. A
surprise presentation was the pilgrim relic of the blood of Pope John Paul II,
which has been traveling the world and was in Miami last year.
The 6
a.m. Mass was celebrated by a newly ordained priest: Father Javier Barreto, a
parochial vicar at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Miami.
"This is done so that a new priest can honor and entrust themselves
to the heart of our Blessed Mother," Mother Adela explained.
Among
those at the vigil were 40 students from Illinois State University. Members of that school's Newman Center travel
to Miami every year to do mission work in schools and parishes.
One
of them, David McDermott, said it was his second year attending, and he feels
the need to share the love of the Sacred Heart, especially with youth.

Students from the Newman Center at Illinois State University and friends of the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary around the world assisted to the night vigil at St. John Vianney Seminary.
"Last
year inspired me as I learned more about the Catholic faith," said McDermott, who is in the process of
becoming Catholic. "I grew a lot because of this vigil."
Sonia
Ballesteros, a parishioner from St. Joseph Church, said what the vigil
meant for her.
"This
is a beautiful encounter because the Sacred Heart of Christ is the love he has
for us, as well as the love he has towards his mother Mary," Ballesteros said. "This is an important
night for those who are homeless or sick, as well as for those who feel
emptiness in their hearts.
"We
can give others so much with a smile, a hug, a prayer … We need to give out love," said
Ballesteros. "This is what tonight is about."
