Father Carbajales died Oct. 22 in Spain at the age of 82 after 55 years of priesthood.

Born in Havana, Cuba, on Dec. 25, 1932, Father Carbajales entered the seminary there and completed his studies in Rome, where he was ordained for the Discalced Carmelite Order on April 22, 1960. In addition to his native Spanish, he spoke English, French, Italian and Latin.

In 1971, he came to Miami to work with the Cuban community, and was incardinated into the archdiocese in 1977. (Incardination denotes the diocese or religious community to which a priest belongs.)

He served at St. John the Apostle in Hialeah from 1971 to 1972; at St. Brendan in Miami for several months in 1972; at St. Cecilia in Hialeah in 1973; and at Immaculate Conception in Hialeah from 1973 to 1974.

He served as parochial vicar at St. Patrick, Miami Beach, from 1974 until 1987; as parochial vicar at St. Michael the Archangel in Miami from 1987 to 1988; and as parochial vicar at Little Flower, Coral Gables, from 1988 to 1989.

He was granted a sabbatical to consider returning to the contemplative life before leaving the archdiocese in September 1989. He had been living in an abbey in France, and later in Spain, for the last several years.
